Introduction

 

Blackheath High School is an independent day school for girls in Blackheath Village in southeast London. Founded in 1880 as part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the school was a state-funded grammar school until 1976.

 

The Senior School curriculum comprises art, business & economics, classics, computer science, design & technology, drama, English, geography, history, mathematics, MFL, music, physical education, psychology, religious studies and sciences.

 

Within the co-curricular programme, girls choose from a vast number of activities such as Amnesty International, Creative Writing, Debating, French Film, Performing Arts, Politics and Psychology.

 

The school’s focus is on cultivating girls’ courage and intellectual curiosity as they are prepared for the world beyond school. Open Events for Blackheath High School 11 Plus (11+) Entry

 

The school hosts a Whole School Open Morning in the autumn term and a ‘School in Action’ Open Morning in March. During the ‘School in Action’ event, you will be able to attend lessons and become familiarised with the teaching on offer at Blackheath High School. Blackheath High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

 

The school admits students on the basis of current-school references, interviews and entrance examination results. 

 

Your daughter will be interviewed prior to taking the entrance examination and will be expected to discuss her interests and experiences. The 11+ entrance examination is set in November of the year preceding entry.

 

The school offers Academic scholarships to girls who demonstrate exceptional abilities and potential. These don’t require additional assessment since they are awarded on the basis of entrance examination results, the candidate’s conduct in the interview and the quality of the school reference report. The best performing candidates will be short-listed for a scholarship interview with the school’s Head.  

 

Blackheath also awards Art, Music and Sport scholarships to gifted girls applying for Year 7 entry. A partial bursary may be granted if your daughter wins a subject scholarship, with the combined value never exceeding the full fees.

 

Bursaries are means-tested and their value is dependent upon your income and financial resources. To be considered for a bursary, you should indicate your interest in your application form. The Admissions Team will reach out with further details.

 

Blackheath High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

 

The Blackheath High School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following papers:

 

  • English 
  • Mathematics 
  • Verbal Reasoning

 

The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.

 

The maths exam assesses your daughter’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.

 

The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
