Introduction

Merton Court is a co-educational preparatory school in Sidcup, Kent. It was established in 1899 under the motto Omnia Strenue (Strive above all) and is a member of the Independent Schools Association and the Independent Schools’ Council. [1]

The seniors’ department syllabus extensively covers a wide range of disciplines, including art & DT, computing, humanities, MFL and religious education. Lessons are tailored to meet individual interests and engage pupils, allowing them to grow in awareness and responsibility for their own learning.

Bringing children a step closer to the natural world with all its wonders, Merton Court delivers the Forest School curriculum. Outdoor education is often considered a facilitator of learning, hence the programme includes a rich selection of activities, maximising pupils’ independence, social skills, self-esteem and cooperation skills. [2]

The school’s ethos is warm and friendly, underpinned by the staff’s holistic approach towards educating which results in strong academic achievements. British values of democracy, including tolerance and acceptance of differences, are at the core of the Merton Court philosophy, as are the efforts to challenge stereotypes throughout the many stages of pupils’ moral and cultural growth.
