Introduction

The Sutton Stage Two exam is highly competitive so it’s important to maximise your time and prepare your child efficiently. For that reason, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to help you and your child navigate this stage of the exam preparation process.

Step 1

Start preparing for the Stage 2 exam before the Stage 1 exam!

The Stage 2 exam has a completely different format to the Stage 1 assessment. Furthermore, there is very little time available between receiving the results from Stage 1 and the date of the Stage 2 test (usually around ten days).

Whilst the Stage 1 exam is undoubtedly important, the Sutton schools place a heavy weighting on the Stage 2 results.

Therefore, it makes sense to plan ahead and start thinking about Stage 2 preparation even before the Stage 1 exam takes place.

Step 2

Use mocks created by experienced examiners!

The practice tests below will prove ideal. They come with explanations and answers for every question so your child can learn and improve quickly. There’s no need to wait around for a tutor. Sample Writing answers are also included.

Each pack includes a full mock test for Stage 2. These tests will provide your child with invaluable timed exam practice whilst also acting as a diagnostic to identify areas to improve.

Step 3

Select the relevant subject-specific Stage 2 resources!

You may find that your child is struggling with particular topics that are assessed in Stage 2 mocks. To drill down on weak areas and help them improve ahead of exam day, we’ve listed our picks of relevant Maths and English skill resources below.

Stage 2 Mathematics exercises

Get hold of at least one of the two packs below. Each one contains plenty of examples of the types of challenging problem solving questions you can expect towards the end of the Stage 2 exam.

These harder questions often tend to be the differentiator in the Stage 2 exam so it’s well worth getting familiar with the various styles and techniques required. Step-by-step written explanations are provided for every question.

Stage 2 English exercises

The Stage 2 English exam consists of a writing task, which is usually based on a prompt.

For example, in the past, students were asked to read a newspaper article and then write a diary entry from the perspective of one of the people mentioned in the article.

It’s vital that your child reads the prompt carefully and responds accurately. Regurgitating irrelevant, memorised passages will almost certainly lead to a poor mark.

We have three key products to help prepare for the Writing Task. They are designed to develop the key frameworks and mental agility required so your child can deal with the specific writing task that comes up with confidence.

1) 11+ Writing Prompts

This pack contains 28 varied writing prompts covering the 7 key task types known to come up in past Stage 2 exams. Each prompt is accompanied by a detailed video tutorial, explaining how to approach it and what to look out for.

By working through this pack, your child will be prepared for the various possibilities that could come up in the actual exam. Click here to view a sample prompt and video tutorial.

2) The Complete 11+ Writing Guide

This guide is extremely comprehensive. Depending on when you commence your Stage 2 preparation, you may not have time to work through all of it before the exam.

However, it contains key sections that will prove very valuable. For each of the 7 key writing task types, it includes multiple writing samples showing both good and bad answers.

These are annotated to highlight exactly what makes them well written or poorly written. Working through these with your child is extremely useful as it efficiently highlights what sort of techniques they should try to include and what sort of things they must avoid.

The writing samples showing poorly written work are especially popular as, in our experience, students find it fun to point out the errors in the work of others as they are usually on the receiving end of this type of feedback! 😀

At the same time, it makes them reflect on their own work, so they are more conscious of the negative writing styles and habits they should avoid. Click here to learn more and view sample pages.

3) 11+ Rewrite & Improve

In this type of exercise, students must rewrite a short passage, improving it wherever possible. The active process of rewriting the passage sharpens the child’s focus and can lead to significant improvement over a short period of time.

The pack included 30 writing tasks with mark schemes and sample answers included. If your child is a reluctant writer, these shorter tasks can be a much more approachable way to help them improve.

Note on Spelling: If you find that your child struggles with Spelling, we would recommend this pack. However, if you have limited time to focus on English, please focus on the three Writing packs as a priority.
