Introduction

Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) is a Catholic comprehensive school for girls aged 11-18. It has Academy status under the trusteeship of the Society of the Sacred Heart and has the same aims as all the Sacred Heart schools, including building a sense of social responsibility and placing a value on intellect. Underpinning life at Sacred Heart in Hammersmith is its Catholic ethos.

Academically, Sacred Heart High School is impressive. In 2020, the school was awarded a High Performance Learning (HPL) World Class Award, paying testament to the exceptional standard of education SHHS provides to each and every pupil. Following the HPL programme helps pupils, amongst other things, to develop their reasoning skills and to become active learners (rather than passively taking in information). Naturally, this leads to pupils progressing well, which is reflected in the examination results: 38% of recent GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range.

The extra-curricular programme at SHHS is extensive, offering a wide variety of activities, such as coding, rowing, ukulele, debating and badminton. Joining clubs and societies enables students to enhance their existing skills and discover new talents. In addition to this, all students are encouraged to get involved in community service projects and fundraising events. This involvement shapes girls into compassionate young ladies with a desire to make a difference in the world.

Pastoral care is at the heart of everything Sacred Heart High School does. The emphasis is on kindness staff are kind to pupils and pupils are expected to be kind to each other. Should a pupil experience any difficulties or have any concerns, experienced pastoral support staff are available to offer a listening ear and guidance at break and lunchtime in the Erskine Centre. They will assist pupils in identifying strategies that will contribute to their emotional well-being. Girls and their parents/carers will be signposted to external agencies for additional support when appropriate.

Sacred Heart High School, Hammersmith: School Details and Admissions Process

Address: 212 Hammersmith Road, W6 7DG

County: Greater London

Admissions info: admissions@sacredh.lbhf.sch.uk or 020 8748 7600

School type: Catholic comprehensive school for girls

Open Days: September

Banding test: A Non-Verbal reasoning test in November of Year 6

Families are encouraged to visit the school in September to learn more about its philosophy, meet key members of staff and explore the facilities. In this way, you commence the first stage of the admissions process.

If you decide you would like a place for your child at SHHS, you will be asked to complete two forms:

  1. The Common Application Form, which should be submitted to your Local Authority by the end of October in Year 6.
  2. The Supplementary Information Form, which should be submitted to SHHS by the same deadline. (However, the school strongly recommends that you submit this form before the October half-term.)

If relevant, please do not forget to submit your Certificate of Catholic Practice (available from the priest at the parish where you worship).

As part of the admissions process, your daughter will be asked to sit a banding test in November of the year preceding entry. The school categorises applicants based on the performance of the entire cohort taking the test. There will be three bands:

Band 1: for those of above-average ability.

Band 2: for those of average ability.

Band 3: for those of below-average ability.

25% of available places will be given to pupils from Band 1, 50% to pupils from Band 2 and 25% to pupils from Band 3. This means that the school can ensure that it has a truly comprehensive intake.

If there are more applicants than places available, the school will use its oversubscription criteria, giving priority to:

  1. Looked after Catholic girls or previously looked after Catholic girls.
  2. Catholic girls with a Certificate of Catholic Practice.
  3. Catholic girls without a Certificate of Catholic Practice.
  4. Other looked after or previously looked after girls.
  5. Members of the Catechumenate of a Catholic Church and members of Eastern Christian Churches.

Please note that girls with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) will be admitted before the application of the over-subscription criteria.

For more detailed information about the oversubscription criteria and priority within oversubscription criterion groups, please click here.

Offers are made at the beginning of March on National Offers Day. If your child receives an offer, you should inform both your Local Authority and SHHS whether you wish to accept or decline it. SHHS asks that this be done within five working days of receiving the offer.

Sacred Heart High School, Hammersmith: 11 Plus (11+) Banding Test

The 11+ banding test consists of a Non-Verbal reasoning test, which is sat in November of Year 6. All applicants are required to take this test (other than girls with an EHCP or looked after girls/previously looked after girls, although they are still encouraged to do so). SHHS will endeavour to find an alternative day for your daughter to take the test if there is a valid reason for them being unable to do so on the arranged day.

The Non-Verbal reasoning test will assess your daughter’s ability to solve problems by analysing visual information (diagrams and pictures).
