Introduction
Plymouth College is an independent day and boarding school in Plymouth, Devon. Founded as a boys’ school in 1877, Plymouth College became co-educational in 1995.
In Year 7, pupils study English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, history, geography, religious studies, Modern Foreign Languages, design technology, computer science, art, drama, music, PE, classical civilisation and Latin.
Outdoor activities include climbing, canoeing, kayaking, caving, mountain biking, night walks and bushcraft, whilst trips and expeditions have included visits to far-flung destinations such as Tanzania and Malawi.
Plymouth College aims to educate, enrich and empower each one of its pupils via exceptional teaching and strong pastoral support. The advanced curricular and co-curricular programme enables Plymothians to develop leadership, communication and team-working skills along with key traits such as humility and compassion.

Visits to the College will provide you with the opportunity to tour the school and boarding houses and meet the Head. Plymouth College 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Following the school visit, your child will be invited to attend a follow-up taster day. The next step is to register, which can be done online. Please note that the registration fee of £100 is non-refundable.
Your child will then be invited to sit an entrance exam and attend an interview with the Head and other senior teachers. References from their current school will also be requested.
Offers are accepted with a payment of a deposit: £200 for day pupils and £1000 for boarders. Once you have received and accepted an offer of a place, the Admissions team will support and assist you with requirements relating to uniform, travel, induction events, etc.
Plymouth College 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
The school offers Academic, Music, Drama, Art and Sport Scholarships. Their value ranges from 5% to 10% of school fees. All awards are renewed annually and are applied for the duration of the pupil’s time at the college, subject to satisfactory progress, conduct and involvement.
Plymouth College offers financial assistance in the form of means-tested bursaries. They are subject to an annual review and may increase/decrease depending on your circumstances.

Plymouth College 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Plymouth College 11+ entrance exam consists of the following papers:
- English (60 mins)
- Mathematics (60 mins)
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. It also comprises Technical English questions.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
