Introduction
Ackworth School is an independent co-educational school located in the village of High Ackworth, near Pontefract, West Yorkshire. It is one of seven Quaker Schools in England with membership in the Headmasters’ & Headmistresses’ Conference and SHMIS.
By enabling pupils’ progress at a pace appropriate to their age, aptitude, interests and ability, the school fosters a well-integrated and self-disciplined community with an international dimension. Around 50% of the boarding pupils are from overseas, predominantly Asia, with increasing numbers of boarders from Eastern Europe.
Providing service to others within and outside the school as well as having an understanding of wider environmental issues is instilled among students, whilst their academic growth is secured by a broad curriculum which includes art, biology, chemistry, design technology, drama and music, English, food and nutrition, French, geography, German, history, ICT, mathematics, PE and sport, physics, religious studies and Spanish.
Familiarising students with different cultures is encouraged both on campus and beyond. School trips are organised regularly and include visits to France, Sicily, etc.
Ackworth prides itself on the wide range of sports available to students, fostering their overall physical and mental well-being as a positive foundation for their academic work. Through such activities, they are taught the meaning of self-discipline, practice and preparation, teamwork, goal setting, success and failure and resilience.
The state-of-the-art sporting facilities include five football pitches, a cricket pitch, an athletics field, an indoor heated swimming pool, a multi-sports hall, a gymnasium, a fitness suite, four all-weather tennis courts, a multi-sport astro-turf pitch, two Squash courts and numerous table tennis tables.
Ackworth’s thriving multi-cultural community is governed by the notion that differences are to be treasured instead of condemned. This is reflected in the school’s motto as well. Non sibi sed omnibus (Not for oneself but for all) is embodied by all students who tend to benefit greatly from such an approach in the ever-changing world beyond school.
