Introduction
Royal Grammar School (RGS) is a co-ed independent school in Newcastle upon Tyne. Founded in 1525, it received royal foundation by Queen Elizabeth I and is the city’s oldest learning institution. It has twice been rated as the top performing school in the North of England by the Sunday Times. [1]
The curriculum in Year 3 is both broad and stimulating, introducing pupils to the following disciplines: English, maths, science, geography, history, PSHE, religious education, French, drama, art, computing, music and DT, as well as swimming, PE and games.
Students have the opportunity to discover new interests and talents and develop valuable skills via the extracurricular programme of activities, ranging from History Club, Choir and Hockey to Chess, Drama and Fencing.
The most recent ISI report for RGS determined that the school successfully meets the country’s standards for independent schools, providing high-tier education to pupils from various backgrounds who perform well above the national average. [2]
The school is recognised for its high expectations and strong academic benchmarks, due to which leavers often go on to study at the most sought-after universities. Kind, independent and curious, RGS pupils proceed to contribute to society in line with the school motto: Discendo duces (By learning you will lead).
