Basic information: Bishop’s Stortford College is an independent co-ed school in the market town of Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. Established in 1868, it has a Prep Department which caters for around 505 pupils. Open Mornings provide families with the rare opportunity to experience the school’s atmosphere on a normal working day. These consist of a talk from the Head, meetings with members of the teaching and admissions staff and tours of facilities. Booking is made through this page.
Bishop’s Stortford College 10 Plus (10+) Admissions
10+ entry is dependent upon performance in assessments. To be considered for these, your child should be registered with the school by the deadline in late November of the year preceding entry. The registration fee is £100.
Places are usually offered in early February and acceptance should be made by March. Please note that, in order to secure your child’s place, you will be asked to pay a deposit (£2,500).
Bishop’s Stortford College 10 Plus (10+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Candidates for Year 6 entry will be considered for Academic and Music Scholarships. Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of further assessments to top-performing candidates in the entrance examinations. The assessment process will include an interview.
Music Scholarship applicants will also be additionally assessed (in January). These awards require a separate application, using the Scholarship Indication of Interest Form.
Means-tested bursaries are available to families in need of financial support. They can be worth 5–100% of fees, but can vary in value depending on changes in your financial circumstances. To determine this, the school will repeat the means-testing procedure each year.

Bishop’s Stortford College 10 Plus (10+) Exam Format
The Bishop’s Stortford College 10 Plus (10+) exam consists of the following assessments:
- English
- Mathematics
- Verbal Reasoning
The English exam examines comprehension and writing skills, including inference, punctuation and grammar, as well as the fluency of your child’s reading and oral skills.
The Maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including their knowledge of times tables.
The Verbal Reasoning section of the exam is designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
