Introduction
Cranleigh Prep School is an independent boarding school located in the village of Cranleigh, Surrey. Founded in 1865 to educate the sons of local farmers, the school currently occupies 280 acres of land in the beautiful Surrey countryside. Cranleigh’s ethos encompasses the aims of the school’s founders to encourage and enable Cranleighans to look beyond themselves and make a difference to society.
All pupils study biology, chemistry, Digital Literacy, English, modern languages (French, German or Spanish), geography, history, mathematics, physics and RS. Furthermore, pupils choose from Latin or Classical Civilisation and can also take lessons in art, design, drama and music.
The enthusiasm, endeavour and personal achievements of all pupils are equally recognised in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere supported by the House system.
Confidence, resilience, self-awareness and ambition are acquired from the many co-curricular activities on offer, which comprise a wide range of clubs such as the Blaker Society (History of Art), Choir, Climbing, Design Workshops, Debating & Public Speaking, Community Service, Orchestra and many more.
Cranleigh School’s extensive range of extremely high-standard sporting facilities includes outdoor Athletics courts, 3 full-size artificial pitches, 12 hard Tennis courts, 9 astro courts, 8 netball courts, 4 squash courts, 10 grass pitches for Rugby, Football and Cricket, an on-site Equestrian Centre as well as a 9-hole 3-par golf course. For swimming, Cranleigh School has its own indoor 25-metre swimming pool with spectator’s gallery.
The school’s distinct family atmosphere prevails across all boarding houses, classrooms and shared spaces, where extensive pastoral care ensures that pupils are genuinely happy, caring and outward-looking.
The high staff-to-pupil ratio, House staff and tutor system aim to secure paramount well-being amongst children, whilst discipline is maintained through mutual respect and genuine partnership with parents and families.

Cranleigh Prep School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
To secure a place at Cranleigh Prep School, a registration form along with a non-refundable registration fee of £200 should be submitted online. Early registration is highly recommended.
Your child will then be invited to attend one of the Cranleigh Prep Explorers taster sessions, which take place in the Summer Term of Year 5 and the Autumn Term of Year 6. These events give children the opportunity to meet some of the Prep school staff and explore the campus. Activities include bushcraft, indoor climbing, astronaut training and archery.
Initial testing usually takes place between October and mid-November of Year 6. Assessment Day is held in the following January, including an informal interview with a senior staff member, a discussion group, an English paper (composition) and team-building activities.
As part of the admissions process, Cranleigh Prep will obtain current-school reports. Following success in the assessments and on receipt of a positive report from your child’s current Head, an unconditional offer may be made. Places are reserved with a payment of a deposit.
Cranleigh Prep School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Stage One 11+ exam at Cranleigh Prep consists of the following test:
- ISEB Common Pretest
The ISEB Pretest examines your child’s ability in skills such as numeracy, problem solving and vocabulary, with emphasis on how they think and how they respond to the curriculum. The test includes modules assessing maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
On Assessment Day, 11+ candidates will be tested using the following paper:
- English composition (essay)
The English paper examines writing skills. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
