If you wish your son to be considered for a place in Year 8, you should register him for the entrance tests and provide school preferences by the deadline in late October of the year preceding entry. Invitations to sit the entrance test are sent in December, and your confirmation must be submitted by the deadline later in the same month. The Late Transfer test is held in the following February and results are communicated in March.

The Aylesbury Grammar School 12+ entrance examination consists of the following tests:


  • Mathematics (GL)
  • Verbal Reasoning (GL)
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning (GL)


The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include multiple-choice questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.


The multiple-choice Verbal Reasoning paper is designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.


The multiple-choice Non-Verbal Reasoning paper measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
