Introduction
Royal Grammar School, also known as RGS, is an independent day school for boys in Guildford, Surrey. Dating back to 1509, it occupies a Grade I listed building and caters for over 900 students in line with the motto Dieu et mon droit (God and my right). [1]

RGS Guildford 12 Plus (12+) Admissions – Deferred Entry
As part of the 13+ entry route, 12+ examinations are scheduled for pupils who were not registered in time to sit the 11+ assessment. They consist of an online test and a writing task. There will also be an interview with a senior member of staff.
All candidates for 13+ entry who sat the 12+ assessment will be asked to take the Common Entrance or 13+ Scholarship examinations, which are used to confirm their place at the school.
As part of the admissions process, the following fees are payable: £100 for registration (non-refundable) and 25% of the first term’s fees on acceptance of a place.
RGS Guildford 12 Plus (12+) Scholarships and Bursaries
A number of scholarships are available, including in the areas of Academia, Music and Sports. 13+ ISEB Common Academic Scholarship examinations (CASE) include tests in English, mathematics, science, French, geography and history. There will also be an optional paper for Latin. The deadline to apply for CASE examinations is in March.
Bursaries are offered to families who struggle with paying the fees. Pupils from all walks of life get to benefit from a RGS education thanks to the generous bursary scheme. RGS Guildford 12 Plus (12+) Exam Format – Deferred Entry
The RGS Guildford 12 Plus exam consists of the following tests:
- ISEB Common Pretest
- English paper (essay)
The online ISEB Pretest examines ability in skills such as numeracy, problem solving and vocabulary, with emphasis on how pupils think and respond to the curriculum. The test consists of modules testing Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
The English paper examines writing skills, including spelling and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
