Royal Grammar School, Guildford, is an independent day school for boys in Guildford, Surrey. One of the oldest schools in the country, it dates back to 1509 and currently caters for approximately 900 pupils. Due to its effective educational strategy, RGS has recently opened a campus in Qatar.

Royal Grammar School, Guildford, 13 Plus (13+) Admissions
13+ applicants have to be registered with the school in order to be considered for entry and the entrance assessments. The registration deadline is in the beginning of November of Year 6 and the fee of £100 is non-refundable.
Your son will be tested using an online assessment and a written paper, alongside an interview with a senior staff member. If he performs well, he will be invited back to the school in January to attend a second interview.
RGS sends out offers in February of Year 6, to be accepted with a payment of an acceptance deposit.
RGS Guildford 13 Plus (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries
RGS offers Academic and Music Scholarships to 13+ applicants. Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of further assessments, typically taking place in the beginning of May.
Music Scholarships are offered on the basis of audition and informal interview. To be considered for the award, your child should perform at a Grade VI–VII standard on the principal instrument.
The school also offers bursaries, which are means-tested awards that can cover up to 100% of fees. Please note that only families who earn less than £26,000 per annum will be considered for a free place.

RGS Guildford 13 Plus (13+) Pretest Exam Format
The RGS Guildford 13+ examination consists of the following assessments:
- ISEB Common Pretest
- Creative writing
The online ISEB Pretest examines your child’s ability in skills such as numeracy, problem solving and vocabulary, with emphasis on how he thinks and responds to the curriculum. The test consists of modules testing Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
The creative writing paper examines writing skills, including spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The interview aims to provide an insight into your son’s interests and his level of compatibility with the RGS Guildford ethos.

The ISEB Common Pretest is created by a company called GL Assessment. This company also creates the 11+ exam for many schools. There is a lot of overlap between these tests. As such, GL-style material often provides ideal preparation for the ISEB Common Pretest.
