Aldenham School is a co-educational independent school for pupils aged eleven to eighteen, located between Elstree and the village of Aldenham in Hertfordshire.
It was founded in the late sixteenth century by Richard Platt, a proprietor of a London brewery and Master of the Brewers’ Company from 1576 to 1581.
In 1875, the school expanded and girls were admitted, paving the way for it to become fully co-educational.
In the summer of 2016, renovations were carried out on Beevor’s and McGill’s House, improving and updating the boarding facilities. As of September 2017, due to the increasing number of girls in Aldenham’s intake, Riding’s House became a girls’ day house.
The school’s primary aim in regards to Seniors is to ensure that pupils develop an excitement and passion for learning.
The school’s emphasis is on English and mathematics, whilst other core subjects include science, philosophy, religion and ethics, physical education and computing, French, Spanish, dance, history, geography, music, art, design technology and PE.
Pupils in Year 7 are issued with a Prep Diary which helps them manage their time effectively. Parents are expected to sign them at the end of each week. Prep (homework) is set regularly in each subject and pupils are assessed and formally graded for effort and attainment.
One of the key tasks of every school is to ensure that children are effectively prepared for adult life. Aldenham School recognises that in a world of fast-moving technology, preparing pupils for the world of today is not enough. Instead, the school aims to prepare children to cope with a fast-paced world full of new developments.
Aldenham emphasises modern technology as a tool to enhance the educational environment and opportunities of their students. Various locations on campus have been adapted in accordance with this belief, such as the fully equipped recording studio in the Music Department and the Music Technology suite complete with 21 iMacs, the brain scanner in the Psychology classroom and the 3D printer in Design Technology.
The focus at Aldenham School in recent years shifted from Information Technology (learning about currently existing software packages) to Computing (learning how to actually write software packages) in order to prepare pupils for learning in a fast-changing world.

The first step in the admissions process requires that parents complete a registration form and send it with a £100 non-refundable Registration Fee. The school then sends an acknowledgment to parents and the child’s details are entered into the school’s database.
The Headmaster takes the opportunity to meet as many candidates and their parents as possible in the form of an interview. Regarding the timing of the interview, parents will be contacted after registration with further information.
For parents based overseas, a Skype interview will be arranged.
Applicants should be aged eleven before September 1st in the year of entry. Places are offered on the grounds of satisfactory performance in the 11+ examination, interview and a positive school report.
The entrance examination aims to test the skills of candidates in English, mathematics and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
Offers will be made to successful candidates in February of the year of entry, to be accepted in March along with a deposit to secure the place.
Pupils new to Year 7 will attend an Induction Day (a team-building exercise) on the day before the start of the new academic year.
All candidates sit an 11+ examination in January consisting of maths, English and Reasoning papers.
The English paper lasts 1 hour and the maths paper lasts 45 mins. It examines comprehension and writing skills, whilst the maths paper tests problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. Both papers consist of standard format questions.
The Reasoning paper may cover both Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Verbal Reasoning is primarily designed to test and assess pupils’ logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary. Non-Verbal Reasoning paper is designed to test the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
Consisting of thoroughly researched and up to date questions, our practice tests successfully reflect the actual 11+ exam. They offer a methodical approach towards 11+ exam preparation which can help you identify the strong and weak areas in your child’s knowledge base.
