Introduction
Aldenham School is a co-educational independent school for pupils aged eleven to eighteen, located between Elstree and the village of Aldenham in Hertfordshire.
It was founded in the late sixteenth century by Richard Platt, a proprietor of a London brewery and Master of the Brewers’ Company from 1576 to 1581.
In 1875, the school expanded and girls were admitted, paving the way for it to become fully co-educational.
In the summer of 2016, renovations were carried out on Beevor’s and McGill’s House, improving and updating the boarding facilities. As of September 2017, due to the increasing number of girls in Aldenham’s intake, Riding’s House became a girls’ day house.
The school’s primary aim in regards to Seniors is to ensure that pupils develop an excitement and passion for learning.
The school’s emphasis is on English and mathematics, whilst other core subjects include science, philosophy, religion and ethics, physical education and computing, French, Spanish, dance, history, geography, music, art, design technology and PE.
Pupils in Year 7 are issued with a Prep Diary which helps them manage their time effectively. Parents are expected to sign them at the end of each week. Prep (homework) is set regularly in each subject and pupils are assessed and formally graded for effort and attainment.
One of the key tasks of every school is to ensure that children are effectively prepared for adult life. Aldenham School recognises that in a world of fast-moving technology, preparing pupils for the world of today is not enough. Instead, the school aims to prepare children to cope with a fast-paced world full of new developments.
Aldenham emphasises modern technology as a tool to enhance the educational environment and opportunities of their students. Various locations on campus have been adapted in accordance with this belief, such as the fully equipped recording studio in the Music Department and the Music Technology suite complete with 21 iMacs, the brain scanner in the Psychology classroom and the 3D printer in Design Technology.
The focus at Aldenham School in recent years shifted from Information Technology (learning about currently existing software packages) to Computing
