Introduction

Hymers College is a co-educational independent school for children aged 3-18. It is located in Hull and occupies two campuses: Hymers Hessle Mount is the site for pre-school to Year 2, and Hymers College is for Year 3 to Year 13.

The Junior School (Years 3-6) has a broad and balanced curriculum that incorporates traditional subjects, such as English, maths and science, as well as non-traditional subjects, such as drama, ICT and design & technology. Superb facilities, including a design workshop and a science laboratory, support pupils’ learning.

Extra-curricular activities the school provides mean that pupils can enhance their existing skills and discover new talents. This helps pupils grow in confidence and develop into well-rounded young people.

Pastoral care is exemplary, with the CARE Code being at the centre of life in the Junior School. Care means that everyone looks after each other. Acceptance means everyone is valued for who they are. Respect means that everyone is listened to. Effort means that everyone does their best, both in lessons and outside of lessons. As a result, the school community is warm and supportive and is a place where children can thrive.

County: East Riding of Yorkshire

Admissions info: admissions@hymers.org or 01482 343555

School type: Co-educational independent school

Open events: Autumn and Spring terms

Assessment date: January of Year 2

The school warmly invites you to come to one of their open events so you can see for yourself how much they have to offer. These are held on various dates in the Autumn and Spring terms, and booking is essential. If the scheduled dates are not convenient for you, it is possible to arrange a tour on another date.

Should you decide you would like a place for your child in Year 3, you should fill out the online registration form and pay the £25 registration fee. This should be done by the start of December when your child is in Year 2.

Hymers College will require references from your child’s current school as part of the admissions process. Also, your child will be interviewed and undertake assessments on Assessment Day, held in January of Year 2. The process is designed to identify pupils who will engage fully with life at Hymers College and be academically able to access the school’s demanding curriculum.

Please note that pupils at Hymers Hessle Mount do not need to sit an entrance assessment for entry to Year 3 (unless they have not been at Hessle Mount long enough for teachers to assess their academic ability). They will typically be automatically transferred to the Junior School.

Hymers College 7 Plus (7+)/Year 3: Bursaries

Hymers College will be offering bursaries to pupils in Year 7 and above for the 2025/26 academic year (this can change from year to year, so do contact the school if you are interested in a bursary).

Hymers College does not currently offer any scholarships.

Hymers College 7 Plus (7+)/Year 3: Entrance Assessment

Assessment Day will involve the following:

  • a short English assessment
  • a short maths assessment
  • an informal interview
  • problem-solving activities in a group

The English assessment covers reading, writing and comprehension.

The maths assessment will have questions appropriate for the relevant national curriculum stage.

The interview gives the school the opportunity to find out about your child’s hobbies and see whether they are enthusiastic about learning.

The group problem-solving activities allow the school to see how well your child works as part of a team and to assess their reasoning skills.
