Introduction
Berkhamsted School is an independent school in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. The current school was formed in 1997 after the merger of the Berkhamsted Grammar School, the Berkhamsted School for Girls and the Berkhamsted Preparatory School.
The newly merged school was initially called Berkhamsted Collegiate School and was re-named Berkhamsted School in 2008.
Berkhamsted School follows the ‘Diamond school’ model according to which pupils are taught co-educationally in the Pre-Prep School, Prep School and Sixth Form, but independently in their Senior years, between the ages of 11 and 16.
Fostering a tradition of developing remarkable people whilst remaining firmly rooted in the local community, the school is noted for its distinctive collegiate and pastoral structure and the variety of facilities supporting the extensive co-curricular programme.
Both girls and boys partake in the Art and Design co-curricular programme, comprising Sculpture, History of Art, Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics and Painting. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is also available to all, along with the Outdoor Education and Performing Arts programmes.
Trips within the UK and abroad occur on a regular basis. Examples of inspiring trips undertaken at Berkhamsted Boys include trips to London to watch a live concert performed by a professional symphony orchestra, a mosque visit in Year 9 to facilitate understanding of Islam in the modern world and a Year 7 trip to St Albans to visit the Abbey and a synagogue.
Residential trips are age-appropriate and designed to be enjoyable. They include: a Year 7 trip to Italy, a Year 9 French trip to Maison Claire Fontaine, the annual Year 10 History trip to Berlin to enhance studies of Nazi Germany and the Cold War, a trip to Paris in Years 10 and 11 and a Geography trip to the Azores to study the volcanic landscape.
In the classroom, the school’s high standards are applied in educating both girls and boys. Seniors learn how to improve their communication skills through active listening and to respond with empathy, understanding and compassion even when a difference in opinions prevails amongst them.
At Berkhamsted, any failure is viewed as a valuable learning opportunity, thus maturing the students’ understanding of the world and encouraging innovative thinking.
