Introduction

Eltham College is an independent day school in Mottingham, southeast London. Dating back to the early Victorian era, it is an elite establishment, catering for a mixed cohort in line with the highest of standards and boasting an impressive list of notable alumni. [1]

Eltham College Junior School has its own identity but is still very much part of Eltham College. It is the main prep school feeder into the Senior School and offers a broad and contemporary syllabus, covering everything from mathematics and languages to humanities and technology.

Focused on linking achievement and discipline with the broader life of the school, the junior department provides a rich selection of extracurriculars, including fencing, cookery, chess, photography, coding and Mandarin. The school believes that enabling students to learn Mandarin will help them adapt not only to different sounds but also to different linguistic rules – both of which are ideal stimuli for enquiring minds. Eltham College 7 Plus (7+) Scholarships and Bursaries

There are no scholarships available for Eltham College Junior School, but a number of scholarships are available at age 11 for entry to the Senior School. Eltham College 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format

The Eltham 7+ entrance exam consists of the following assessments:

  • English (including Verbal Reasoning)
  • Mathematics (problem solving and arithmetic)

The English exam covers both writing and reading comprehension, as well as Verbal Reasoning. The comprehension sections are age-standardised, consisting of multiple-choice questions that test inference, grammar and vocabulary awareness. The exam will also assess the fluency of your child’s oral skills, including their reading proficiency.

The multiple-choice mathematics exam assesses knowledge of various mathematical concepts, including addition and subtraction; sequencing; odds and evens; the ability to use simple fractions, etc. Conceptual awareness and facility with number will be of greater importance to the outcome than “number crunching” skills.
