Introduction

St. Michael’s School has been named the 2019 Independent Secondary School of the Year for Wales by The Sunday Times. It is a cluster of independent schools in Bryn, a village situated to the east of Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, with a lovely coastal location.

St. Michael’s is comprised of a pre-preparatory school, preparatory school, senior school and sixth form, which together educate children from the age of 3 through to 18. The schools work closely together and pupils take part in shared activities.

St. Michael’s School is fully coeducational. It is predominantly a day school, but does have some boarding places available (for students from 11 years of age upwards). It only has around 500 pupils in total and class sizes are small.

The school is part of Broadway Education, a family-owned business that also includes Bosworth Independent College in Northampton, Talbot House in Bournemouth and Moyles Court School in Hampshire.

Since St. Michael’s School was established in 1923, it has had a reputation for academic excellence. In Years 7–9, it follows the National Curriculum, but teachers have the freedom to develop and modify the subject guidelines to ensure that pupils are fully stretched and challenged.

The school sets homework in an average of four subjects per day, which children are expected to complete conscientiously to help them develop a positive work ethic. This system has proved successful for the school and it consistently appears in the top 100 in independent school league tables. Recently, it was in the top 30 UK schools for A-level results in 2018 and the top 20 UK schools for GCSE results.

St. Michael’s School stands on several acres of land, which include playing fields and a yard that are used for tennis, netball and basketball. For other sporting activities, such as badminton, skiing, climbing and football, students are taken offsite, with the facilities at a local leisure centre being utilised for the practical aspects of GCSE PE.
