Introduction
Basic information: Merchant Taylors’ School is an independent day school for boys in London. Established in 1561, it occupies a magnificent 285-acre campus and is an all-through school, featuring a Prep Department also known as Merchant Taylors’ Prep (MTP). [1]
Curriculum: The purposeful learning environment in the Prep is firmly supported by a relevant syllabus, maximising pupils’ knowledge in the areas of DT, humanities, IT, mathematics and science, among others. The Wellbeing and PSHEE programme reinforces children’s collective understanding, familiarising them with complex social concepts that constitute modern life.
Co-curricular: Beyond the academic realm, MTP offers a rich selection of activities to further develop pupils’ skills. Ranging from choir, chess and origami to crafts, Science Club and table tennis, the programme engages children while simultaneously allowing them to facilitate lasting friendships with peers. [2]
ISI Inspection report: Merchant Taylors’ Prep was recently rated as ‘excellent’ by the ISI, successfully meeting all of the national requirements for quality education. Pupils’ conduct was observed throughout the inspection, and the ISI’s findings reveal that their behaviour, concern for others and sense of respect are of exceptional standard. [3]

Merchant Taylors’ Prep 8 Plus (8+) Admissions
8+ is not the school’s standard point of entry. Due to this, you are advised to reach out to the school to learn if there are places available. If this is confirmed, you will be asked to register your child for entry. The registration form should be submitted with a £100 non-refundable fee.
The assessments will test your child’s current knowledge and skills, while reports and references (from their present school) will be obtained as evidence of their prior achievements. If a place is offered, you will be asked to accept it with a payment of a £1050 deposit.

Merchant Taylors’ Prep 8 Plus (8+) Exam Format
The Merchant Taylors’ Prep 8 Plus (8+) exam consists of the following assessments:
- English
- Mathematics
- Reasoning
The English assessment examines comprehension and writing skills, including spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as the fluency of your child’s reading and oral skills.
The Maths exam assesses problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including your child’s knowledge of times tables.
The Verbal Reasoning section of the Reasoning test is designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning section of the Reasoning test measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
