Basic information: Abbot’s Hill School is an independent day school for girls in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Established in 1912, it boasts a varied activities programme, aimed at broadening pupils’ talents and interests. [1]

Open Events for Abbot’s Hill School 8 Plus (8+) Entry


Abbot’s Hill hosts a variety of open events throughout the year, including Open Mornings and In Action events. During these, you and your child get to explore facilities, partake in on-site activities and view various demonstrations, as well as enjoy refreshments. Members of the admissions and teaching staff will be on hand to answer questions of interest. 


Abbot’s Hill School 8 Plus (8+) Admissions


8+ is not the school’s standard point of entry, it’s in fact an occasional vacancy. The registration deadline for 8+ applicants is in January of the calendar year of entry.


As part of the admissions process, Abbot’s Hill will obtain a reference from your daughter’s current school. 8+ assessments take place in February and offers of places are posted in March, with an acceptance deadline set later the same month.

Scholarships and bursaries are not available to 8+ applicants. 


Abbot’s Hill School 8 Plus (8+) Exam Format


The Abbot’s Hill School 8 Plus (8+) exam consists of the following assessments:


  • English 
  • Mathematics 
  • Reasoning


The English assessment examines comprehension and writing skills, including inference and grammar, as well as the fluency of your child’s reading and oral skills.    


The Maths exam assesses problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including your child’s knowledge of times tables.


The Verbal Reasoning section of the Reasoning exam is designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.


The Non-Verbal Reasoning section of the Reasoning exam measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
