Introduction

Royal Russell School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the Shirley area of Croydon, Surrey. A successful establishment, it educates pupils aged 3 to 18 and is a member of the Heads’ Conference (HMC).

Royal Russell School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Registering is a vital step in the Royal Russell 11+ admissions process. Upon receipt of the registration form, a confidential reference will be requested from your child’s current school.

The entrance examinations consist of an online test and a paper. Your child will also attend a short interview and they are advised to bring a piece of work or an object of interest to be used as a starting point for the discussion. In the afternoon, they can take part in an activity of their choice, such as cooking or sports. 

Offers of places are generally made in February following the January exams. The deadline for acceptance is in March.

The Royal Russell School online test consists of modules testing pupils’ skills in the following areas:

⦾ English – this section measures reading comprehension, grammar, spelling and punctuation skills using multiple-choice questions. 

⦾ Mathematics – this section tests problem-solving and arithmetic skills, featuring questions with diagrams/charts.

⦾ Verbal Reasoning – this section evaluates vocabulary and understanding of meaning in context.

⦾ Non-Verbal Reasoning – this section assesses the ability to reason using shapes, space, diagrams and images.

The Creative writing task assesses imagination and creativity. Marks are awarded for proper form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
