Introduction
Talbot Heath School is an independent day and boarding school for girls in Talbot Woods, Bournemouth, Dorset. Founded in 1886, Talbot Heath is a Church of England school and it is selective for entry. [1]
Noted for its warm learning environment, it provides pupils with a well-integrated educational programme, comprising English, humanities, mathematics, science, MFL and Classics, among others. Talbot Heath School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
The deadline for registrations for an 11+ place is in October of the year preceding entry. Entry is dependent upon performance in competitive examinations, along with quality reports and references from your child’s current school. There may also be an interview.
Before or after the exams, your child can attend a Taster Day in order to get a feel for life on campus. This can be arranged through the Admissions Office.
Successful candidates in the 11+ exams are typically offered a place in February. To secure it, you will be asked to pay a £1,100 deposit.
Talbot Heath School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Applicants whose exam performance places them in the top 20% will be invited to sit further assessments in order to be considered for a scholarship. At 11+, Talbot Heath offers Academic, Music, Sports and All-Rounder Scholarships.
Academic Scholarship applicants will be assessed through English and Maths papers. Music Scholarship applicants will be expected to perform at a Grade III standard on their main instrument.
Sports Scholarship Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of a practical assessment and a portfolio, containing any medals, newspaper cuttings, certificates, etc. There will also be an informal interview with the Head of PE.
All-Rounder Scholarship applicants must be among the top-performing candidates in the 11+ exams in order to be considered. These awards can include two of the following disciplines: sports, music, art and drama. More details about all scholarship awards are available here.
Parents who are in a need of financial assistance with paying the fees can apply for a bursary. These awards are means-tested, hence the evaluation procedure will require evidence of your annual income and assets. They are awarded at the discretion of the school and are reviewed annually.
Talbot Heath School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Talbot Heath School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following tests:
- English (non-multiple choice)
- Mathematics (non-multiple choice)
- Verbal Reasoning (non-multiple choice)
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
