Introduction
Emanuel School is an independent, co-educational day school located in Battersea, south-west London. Based on its GCSE results, Emanuel School is ranked within the top 100 of all independent schools and within the top 50 co-educational schools nationally.
The school’s rich history dates back to 1594 when Lady Anne Dacre instructed her executors to build Emanuel Hospital in Westminster for the relief of twenty aged people and for the care and education of approx. 20 boys and girls.
By the middle of the 19th century, the school expanded, rising from the ashes of Emanuel Hospital into a new institution relocated in Wandsworth. The girls attending the old hospital school were sent to Grey Coat Hospital and Emanuel remained boys-only until 1995. During the following century, Emanuel School slowly grew into a modern complex which now houses well over 900 pupils.
The curriculum includes English, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics (as separate sciences), geography, history, religious studies, computing, design and robotics (CDR), music, art and design, drama and Latin. Pupils can choose one out of three foreign languages offered in the curriculum: French, German or Spanish.
The careers department at Emanuel provides information and one-to-one consultations for students to help them organise work placements. The careers centre offers guidance literature, as well as practice material for entrance examinations such as GMAT, SAT and ACT for those considering US universities.
Students are also provided with access to ECON (Emanuel Careers & Opportunities Network), a database run by the Emanuel Parents’ Association, which enables pupils to reach out to parents for support and advice about their future careers.
