Introduction
Founded in 1594 by Lady Dacre, Emanuel School has the rare and unusual status of being co-ed from the very beginning.
Its starting point is to create a ‘safe and caring community’ where children can be happy; this then ensures a place in which their girls and boys can grow and thrive academically and as individuals.
Intellectually, pupils are challenged in their lessons and inspired by an impressive array of outside speakers addressing a wide range of topics including politics, science, academia, the media and business. The school believes that success comes in many forms. It admits pupils with talents in music, art, drama and sport and proudly awards more scholarships in art, music, sport and drama than any other school in London.
Be warned: it limits its registrations (because it interviews every child) to 200 pupils at 10+ (and 1,000 at 11+), so be sure to get in quickly if you want to register at this school.

Emanuel School 10 Plus (10+) Admissions
Candidates for 10+ entry for Emanuel School sit entrance papers in maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. The pass mark is a minimum of 60%, but in practice, candidates at 10+ are rarely made offers if they score less than 65% in maths and English. The average score of those accepting places is in fact around 75% in maths and English, so do bear this in mind when deciding whether or not to apply.
If your child is not successful at 10+, there will be the opportunity to try again at 11+. The school automatically offers you the chance to register him or her at 11+ when they post out the 10+ decision letters. However, if you are offered a place at 10+ and you don’t take it, you can’t try again at 11+.

Emanuel School 10 Plus (10+) Interviews
All candidates at 10+ are interviewed, which is different to most selective schools, who usually only interview those who have done well in the exam. Candidates are asked to fill out a brief background form on their interests and achievements (parents can help with this) and then have a 20-minute interview.
Whilst no specific preparation is required for the interview, we would advise thinking about the key achievements you choose to showcase. A mock interview can also be a useful for identifying these, as well as building confidence – please contact us if you would like further information on our mock interviews.
