Introduction

Denstone College is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Denstone, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. It was established by Nathaniel Woodard in 1868 and has strong Christian and private school traditions.

The extensive curriculum comprises art, biology, chemistry, DT, drama, English, French, Spanish, geography, history, computing, mathematics, music, PE, physics and religious studies. Recent GCSE performance was marked by the highest proportion of top grades at the College since 2010, with almost half of all entries gaining the top grades of 9, 8 or 7.

The well-resourced co-curricular programme offers over 100 activities every week, including a full programme of sports, music and drama. From shooting and orchestra and specialist sports coaching and clubs such as Motoring Enthusiasts to the Outdoor Pursuits Instructor (OPI) programme which runs a range of expeditions, Denstone College provides each child with the opportunity to develop key skills and virtues that will benefit them in adulthood.

The school’s provision of a high quality education in the classroom and beyond allows pupils to maximise their potential, developing confidence and resilience whilst becoming fully prepared to play a useful role in society.

Denstone College 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Pupils generally join Denstone College in the First Form (aged 11). If there are more applicants than places available, children are placed on a waiting list, therefore prospective parents are encouraged to register their child well in advance of the likely entrance dates.

To apply for a place at Denstone for your son or daughter, you need to confirm registration by sending a copy of their passport and the registration fee of £100. Once registration is complete, the school will ask for a reference from your child’s current school.

You will then receive information on 11+ assessments, scholarships and interviews. The Denstone entrance examinations take place in November prior to the year of entry.

Acceptance of a place is made by returning a deposit along with the Acceptance Form (sent to you with the offer letter). The amount is typically refunded during your child’s last term at the school.

Denstone College 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

The number of scholarships depends on the number and quality of applicants. Academic Scholarships are offered to academically strong candidates and they don’t carry any reduction in fees. Denstone’s scholarship awards also recognise talent and ability in the following areas:

  • Art
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Sports

To pupils demonstrating exceptional abilities across a multitude of areas, including academia, art and music, the school offers All-Round Scholarships.

A small number of bursaries are available each year, with offers based on your financial circumstances alongside your child’s performance in the entrance assessments.

In order to be considered for a bursary, you will need to complete a Financial Circumstances Form which is then submitted to the Bursar who will make a recommendation to the Head. You should complete this form prior to the entrance examinations.

Bursaries are based on an in-depth financial assessment that takes into consideration all financial circumstances including capital assets and investments, not just income and expenditure.

Denstone College 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The entrance assessment for candidates applying to join Year 7 (11+) consists of two papers:

  • English
  • Mathematics

The English paper focuses on both writing and comprehension skills, including spelling, grammar and inference.

The maths exam tests problem-solving and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
