Birkdale School is an independent school for boys from ages 4 to 18, located in the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Founded in 1904 by Maurice Asterley, Birkdale is a registered charity, underpinned by a strong Christian ethos.
The small classes, expert teaching and the aspirational environment allow pupils to grow both personally and academically. Typically, around two-thirds of all GCSE grades are A* or A at Birkdale.
The comprehensive curriculum comprises art and design, classics, design & technology, drama, English, geography, history, ICT / Computing, maths, modern languages, music, PE, religious education and science.

In the scope of the Senior School extra-curricular programme, Birkdale organises trips abroad on a regular basis, including visits to Spain, France, Germany, Iceland, Belgium, Nepal, North America and China.
Birkdale is one of the few schools recognised by the Confucius Institute for its work in promoting the study of Mandarin Chinese. In 2013, Birkdale was awarded the coveted accolade of becoming a Confucius Classroom.

The school’s Open Mornings are an excellent opportunity to meet staff and current pupils, as well as see the school buildings. The date for the next Open Morning has not yet been set yet.

Birkdale School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
The admission process for Year 7 entry starts with registration along with a copy of your son’s birth certificate and a £50 registration fee. The deadline for registrations is in December of the preceding year.
The following month (January), your son will sit entrance examinations which consist of maths, English and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers. There will also be an interview with the Head/Assistant Head of Section or the Head Master.
The results of the exam will be communicated in February.

The Birkdale School’s 11+ entrance examinations consist of English, maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers.
The English paper aims to evaluate your son’s reading, comprehension and writing skills. The maths paper is designed to examine your son’s problem-solving and arithmetic skills.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper measures his ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve. It tests logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
