Introduction

Brighton College, recently awarded the impressive title of ‘School of the Decade’ by The Sunday Times, is an independent co-educational school that is located in East Sussex. Its Prep School caters for pupils aged 3-13, offering day places only (boarding places are available at the College from Year 9 onwards). Attending Brighton College Prep School effectively prepares pupils for their transition to the College.

The motto of Brighton College Prep School is Be Kind. Be Curious. Be Confident. Be the Best You. Having this motto at the heart of school life means that pupils develop a strong set of values, stretch themselves academically and become self-assured (without being arrogant).

Dedicated teachers share the passion they have for their areas of expertise with their students. This leads to pupils developing a lifelong love of learning. Subjects include traditional ones, such as English language, English literature, maths and history, as well as non-traditional ones, such as Mandarin, home economics and drama. Lessons are enhanced with trips, visits and workshops, all designed to be inspirational and to remind pupils that they have a role to play in society. Indeed, the recent ISI report commented on the excellent social development of pupils and how conscious they are of the world outside of the classroom.

The Prep School’s co-curricular programme is extensive, enabling students to nurture existing talents and discover skills they never knew they had. With over 100 clubs to choose from, there is something for everyone. From taekwondo, golf and movie-making to yoga, choir and pottery, there is no excuse for pupils to be bored at breaktime or after school!

Pastoral care is taken very seriously by the school, meaning that children feel safe and secure. There is an emphasis on being kind and valuing each individual for who they are. Assemblies and Chapel services are used as an opportunity to underline the importance of tolerance and treating others with respect and compassion, resulting in a caring student body in which pupils thrive.

Brighton College Prep School, Brighton 9 Plus (9+) Admissions Process

9+ is not a standard entry point, so it is worth contacting the admissions team to see if they expect any places to be available.

If places are expected to be available, the first step of the admissions process is to visit the campus. This will enable you and your child to experience the atmosphere of Brighton College Prep School and learn more about its ethos, giving you the chance to decide whether it is the right place for your child. The school arranges individual visits throughout the year and also holds Open Mornings.

If you decide Brighton College Prep School is a good fit for your child, you should complete a registration form online before the start of November of Year 4. Please note that registering requires paying a £180 non-refundable registration fee (£390 for international students).

All registered pupils will be invited to the school in early January of Year 4 to meet the staff and pupils and to sit assessments. Candidates will also take part in a small group interview with a member of the senior management team and participate in a team-building activity so that their communication skills can be assessed. Later in the same month, offers of places will be made. If your child receives an offer, you will need to accept it with a payment of £2,000 (£10,000 for international students). This acceptance deposit is refunded when your child leaves Brighton College Senior School (or when they leave Brighton College Prep School if they do not pass the required entrance exams for a place at Brighton College Senior School). Additionally, there will be a £90 non-refundable administration fee. Once you have accepted a place, you will be sent an information pack, and the school will arrange for your child to meet their Year 5 teacher and classmates in the summer term of Year 4.

The school encourages you to reach out to their admissions team if you have any questions at any point in the admissions process. Contact details are provided below. Please note that Brighton College opened a Prep School in Kensington, London in 2023. To register for a place there, you should visit their website. They follow a similar admissions process.
