Introduction

Basic information: Newcastle School for Boys (NSB) is an independent school for boys in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It occupies three sites in the Gosforth area of the city, including a Victorian-era building. [1]

Curriculum: The academic provision is focused on boosting English, science and mathematics skills, providing sufficient room for exploration of further disciplines, including art, DT, MFL, humanities, ICT, music, RS and PSHE. Aimed at securing children’s physical and overall health, swimming and PE form an integral part of the curriculum.

Co-curricular: The school is noted for fostering academic and personal successes, enabling pupils’ access to a broad programme of activities. Everything from coding and golf to choir and book club is on offer, turning the learning experience into an adventure, particularly memorable for its spirit of exploration. [2]

ISI Inspection report: According to NSB’s latest ISI report, the moral, social and cultural development of pupils is at the highest level possible. Children are described as articulate, skilled and confident individuals, who engage in interactions with staff and peers with respect and strong appreciation of differences. [3]

At Newcastle School for Boys, pupils are treated as individuals, fully benefitting from the friendly and forward-thinking ethos rooted in traditional values. They engage in volunteering and charity work and take trips to exciting local destinations and beyond, expanding their cultural and social horizons in parallel with their awareness of differences.

Newcastle School for Boys 8 Plus (8+) Admissions

8+ is not the school’s standard point of entry, hence the assessments don’t have a fixed date. 8+ applicants are all invited to the school to attend a trial day, scheduled at a mutually convenient date.

During trial day, the school will test your son’s skills using a computer-based test and an English writing paper.

Newcastle School for Boys 8 Plus (8+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships are not available to 8+ applicants. However, the school does offer means-tested awards to children from families in financial need. The assistance is determined on a sliding scale, linked to family income and other financial information.

Typically, the maximum level of assistance is 50% of the fees. Please note that it is unlikely that any significant bursary award would be made to a family with a gross income of more than £60,000.

The value of the award will be reviewed annually, hence you will be asked to provide details of your income and capital each year. For more details, please reach out to the Admissions Team.
