Introduction
Alton School is an independent co-educational day school on the outskirts of Alton, Hampshire. The school was established in 1938 by the Sisters of Our Lady of Providence, occupying a 19-acre estate.
The Senior School curriculum consists of English, mathematics, religious education, geography, history, MFL, Latin and science. After classes, pupils can take part in a wide range of sporting activities, such as Football, Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Swimming and Equestrian.
Alton is a leading Catholic school on the border of Hampshire and Surrey, and, as such, it places great emphasis on personal faith, tolerance, service, friendship and respect for others. Pupils of all faith backgrounds are welcomed and encouraged to actively engage in community service and fundraising activities, addressing in that way the needs of the wider world.

Open Events for Alton School 11 Plus (11+) Entry
Alton School holds a Taster Day for Year 7 candidates in October, Open Mornings in February and June, an Open Evening in September and an Open Day Festival in May. To register your attendance, please contact the Admissions Team.
Individual school tours, led by a current pupil, include a meeting with the Headmaster. These can be arranged with the Admissions Registrar.
Alton School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
By completing a Registration Form, you will take the first step towards applying for a place at Alton Senior School. This should be made by the end of October for entry the following September. The next step includes a meeting with the Headmaster.
In early November, your child will be invited to sit the entrance examinations, which take place in January. A place will be offered on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination and positive current-school reports.
Alton School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
If your child performs exceptionally well in the exam, they might be asked to return to sit the Scholarship paper. Scholarships remain in place throughout your child’s time at the school.
At 11+, the following scholarships are available: Academic, Art, Drama, Music, Violin, Sport, Sport Development Award, Tennis, Equestrian and Catholic Award. Most scholarships are worth 10% of school fees.
Scholars will be expected to make a strong contribution to the life of the school in their particular field, work hard and set a good example.
Families in need of financial assistance may apply for a means-tested bursary, awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster. To be considered eligible, your family income should not exceed £65,000 and there should not be any significant additional assets.
Bursaries are means-tested and you will be asked to complete a confidential financial assessment and submit supporting information.

Alton School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Alton School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following papers:
- English
- Mathematics
- Verbal Reasoning
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess their logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
