Introduction
St John’s College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school located in Southsea, Hampshire. Founded by the De La Salle Brothers in 1908, the school owns 40 acres of sports grounds and has enjoyed some notable sporting successes in recent years.
Subjects offered to Seniors cover art, art textiles, business studies, computing, design technology, drama, English, geography, history, mathematics, MFL, music, physical education, religious studies, biology, chemistry and physics. The impressive range of co-curricular activities includes Drama Tech Club, LAMDA, Science STEAM Club, Magic Club, Robotics Club and Debating Society.

Open Mornings allow families to hear from the Head, take a pupil-led tour of the campus, meet with the teaching staff and House Parents for coffee and visit Boarding Houses.

To join St John’s at 11+, your child will be asked to sit an entrance assessment and attend an interview. Reports/references from their current school will also be requested.
Following successful performance in all key stages of the admission process, you may receive a formal, written offer of a place, to be accepted by paying a non-refundable deposit.
St John’s College, Southsea, 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
All Year 7 applicants will be considered for an Academic Scholarship. Top-performing pupils will be invited for further assessments, comprising Maths and English papers, as well as a short interview. The report from their current school will also be taken into consideration.
Music Scholarship applicants should be at (min.) Grade 3 level in at least one instrument by the time they have completed Year 6. Applications for this award should include at least one reference from a teacher and a summary of their musical experience/portfolio. There will be a short interview with the Head of Music, too.
The school also awards Art, Performing Arts and Sports Scholarships. Art Scholarship applicants will be expected to demonstrate aptitude and ability in various media, including drawing, painting and 3D work. Performing Arts scholarships are awarded to talented actors and actresses on the basis of reference, an audition and interview with the Head of Drama.
Sports Scholarships applicants will be invited to meet with the school’s Director of Sports for an interview and practical assessment.
Candidates applying for awards will be expected to achieve a minimum level in the Entrance Assessment, fulfill the requirements set out by the school and apply by the deadline in late January of the year preceding entry.
Means-tested bursaries, valued at up to 50% of fees, are awarded to families in need of financial assistance. They are reviewed annually and may vary in value.
