Introduction
Pocklington School is an independent school in Pocklington, Yorkshire. Founded in 1514 by John Dolman, it is situated in 50 acres on the outskirts of the small market town. Pocklington is the 67th oldest school in the country, recently celebrating its 500th birthday.
The Senior School curriculum comprises art, biology, business & economics, chemistry, classics, design and technology, drama, English, geography, history & politics, ICT/computing/computer science, mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, music, physical education, physics, psychology and religious studies.
The broad co-curricular programme provides pupils with choices from a wide range of activities including sports, music, drama, community action, the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), the Young Enterprise competition and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Pocklington School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Admission to Year 7 is subject to a number of criteria including the availability of a place, entry assessment results and a school report. To register your child for a place at Pocklington Lower School in Year 7, you will need to fill in a registration form and pay a registration fee of £100. Registration guarantees that you will be contacted at the appropriate time with information about the entrance assessments and other entry-related events.
The 11+ entrance assessment will take place in January. There may also be an interview. Offers are generally sent out as soon as the entrance assessment results are known. They should be accepted by the deadline in the offer letter with a payment of a deposit, refunded during your child’s last term at the school.
Pocklington School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
The school offers a number of scholarships every year. They are financial awards granted to a candidate on the basis of their academic or musical excellence.
Dolman Awards are open to all pupils entering Year 7 and are awarded on the grounds of performance in the 11+ exam. Dolman Scholarships cover 10% of fees, whilst Dolman Exhibitions cover 5%. Music Scholarships, covering 5% of fees, are awarded following an audition and interview.
Fee assistance is a financial award that may cover up to 100% of tuition fees. It is confidential and strictly means-tested. If a scholarship or exhibition does not provide you with sufficient funds for admission, and you need further financial assistance, please reach out to the school.
Pocklington School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Pocklington School entrance assessment consists of the following papers:
- English
- Mathematics
- Verbal Reasoning
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
