Introduction
The Read School is a co-educational, independent day and boarding school, based in the rural village of Drax, near Selby in North Yorkshire. Founded in 1667 by Charles Reade, a shipping magnate, the school became co-educational in 1996.
Its strong academic core is complemented by an array of enrichment activities, ranging from choir and drama clubs to animation and language clubs. Fundraising for both national charities such as Children in Need, Comic Relief, Race for Life and the Rotary Club, as well as charities closer to home, is strongly encouraged by The Read and widely accepted amongst pupils.
Life-changing trips to distant destinations are also part of the timetable of extra-curricular activities. The school raises pupils’ cultural awareness through visits to France, Spain, Italy, Morocco and Costa Rica, as well as expeditions to the exotic Indian Himalayas and Iceland.
The Read School may be a small school, but its nurturing ethos and high staff-to-pupil ratio ensures that each pupil aims high. The dynamic atmosphere on campus boosts pupils’ ambition. They leave school not only with fond memories and firm friendships, but also with the academic qualifications and social skills necessary for them to make a positive difference in the years ahead.
