Introduction
Westminster Under School (WUS) is an independent preparatory school for boys in London. Established in 1943, it boasts outstanding public examination results, simultaneously excelling in a number of extracurriculars, including sport, drama, chess and Latin. [1]
The primary goal of the school’s extensive academic provision is to produce life-long learners who will think for themselves throughout their exploration of contemporary issues. WUS provides a rich selection of afterclass clubs which aim to amplify pupils’ skills beyond the curricular requirements. The school hosts Open Mornings, allowing parents and their children to become familiar with the WUS ethos and the school’s range of facilities. Westminster Under School (WUS) 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
The application deadline is in October of the year preceding entry and the registration fee is £150. The 11+ admissions process includes a two-stage examination process and an interview with a senior staff member.
The Stage 1 exam takes place in late November, measuring your child’s skills through an online assessment. Top-performing applicants will be invited to the school to sit a Stage 2, paper-based exam in mid-January. Interviews take place later the same month / in early February. Please note that your child’s school reports will also be taken into consideration.
WUS emails offers in February and sets the acceptance deadline in March. To accept a place, you will be asked to pay a £3000 deposit.
Westminster Under School (WUS) 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
WUS offers Music Scholarships to Year 7 applicants, which typically carry a 10% discount on fees and provide free instrumental tuition. The expected standard is Grade 5 or above on the principal instrument.
Music Scholarships are offered on the grounds of performance in an audition, which is scheduled following your child’s successful entrance tests results. The deadline for scholarship applications is in December of the year preceding entry. More details are available here.
Means-tested bursaries are available. Bursaries awarded at 11+ are valid until your son leaves the school, subject to his satisfactory academic performance. Application for these awards requires that you complete a confidential financial assessment form, so that the school can establish the necessary level of financial support.

Westminster Under School (WUS) 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Westminster Under School (WUS) Stage 1 11+ exam consists of the following test:
- ISEB Common Pretest
The online ISEB Pretest examines your child’s ability in skills such as numeracy, problem solving and vocabulary, with emphasis on how they think and respond to the curriculum. The test consists of modules testing Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
The Westminster Under School (WUS) Stage 2 11+ exam consists of the following tests:
- English
- Mathematics
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
