Introduction
Uppingham School is a co-educational independent school situated in the small market town of Uppingham in Rutland. The school was established in 1584 by Robert Johnson, the Archdeacon of Leicester, who also founded Oakham School.
The broad Year 9 curriculum comprises art, biology, chemistry, classics, design & technology, drama & theatre studies, economics & business, English, geography, history, history of art, ICT, mathematics, MFL, music, philosophy, religious studies, physical education, physics and politics.
The school regularly organises ambitious tours and expeditions across the globe. Past voyages have included a mountaineering trip to Nepal, a classics tour to Greece, an arts and theatre tour of New York and the US East coast, a history trip to Russia, an economics and business tour to Beijing and Shanghai, a choir tour to Italy and a science trip to Florida.
Although the school has a long and proud heritage, it applies innovation and imagination in all aspects of the Uppingham experience. Open Events for Uppingham School 13 Plus (13+) Entry
The school’s open events are called Visiting Days. They offer families the opportunity to meet the Headmaster and other senior staff members, as well as current pupils. An introductory talk from the Head is followed by a tour of the school, which lasts an hour, and a visit to two of the houses that are open for the day. To book a place, please fill in the form available on the school’s website.

Uppingham School 13 Plus (13+) Admissions
If you wish your child to be considered for Year 9 entry, you should complete the registration form and pay the registration fee of £200. The form must be submitted alongside a copy of your child’s birth certificate.
Pupils applying for Year 9 entry sit pre-tests while in Year 7. These are typically taken at the applicant’s current school between September and December. There will also be a 20-minute interview with a member of staff and a writing task. A reference from the candidate’s current school will also be requested.
Offers are conditional on a satisfactory performance in common entrance (the expected average pass mark is 55%) or Uppingham’s own exams in Year 8.
Uppingham School 13 Plus (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Uppingham School offers Academic, Music, Art, Textiles, Design & Technology, Sport, Drama and All Rounder (Thring) scholarships. All of these awards are allocated following a separate assessment/observation and interview.
Non means-tested scholarships cover up to 5% of fees, whilst larger scholarship awards, made on the basis of financial need, may cover up to 110% of fees. Means-tested bursaries are awarded to children whose parents can’t afford to pay the school’s fees. Please be aware, there are a limited number of bursaries available.
All bursaries are reviewed annually and may be increased or decreased depending on your financial circumstances. Your child’s progress, attitude and behaviour will also be taken into consideration. For more information, please refer to the school’s website.
Uppingham School 13 Plus (13+) Pre-Assessment Format
The Uppingham School 13+ pre-assessment consists of:
- Online tests
- A writing task
The online tests will assess your child’s skills in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
– The Mathematics section assesses skills in arithmetic and problem-solving, featuring questions that include diagrams and/or charts.
– The English section comprises multiple-choice questions that test reading comprehension, grammar and punctuation skills.
– The Verbal Reasoning section examines understanding of vocabulary and context.
– The Non-Verbal Reasoning section tests aptitude in analysing shapes, diagrams and visual patterns.
The English writing paper examines writing skills, including spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
