Introduction
Haileybury School, originally a major boys’ public school, is a co-educational independent school located near Hertford. Through the provision of holistic education that balances academic achievement with the development of character, this academically selective school ensures that pupils take up places at the best universities in the UK and around the world.
The curriculum comprises English, maths and science, along with history, geography, theology & philosophy, music, drama, art and Latin, French, Spanish, German and Greek as foreign languages.

Open Events for Haileybury School 11 Plus (11+) Entry
Open Mornings offer the unique opportunity to explore classrooms and outstanding facilities during a pupil-led tour. You and your child will also view various co-curricular demonstrations, meet with the Heads of departments, talk to current pupils and visit a Boarding House.
During these events, members of the Admissions staff will be available to answer any questions you might have. If you have an interest in attending, booking is available via the school’s website.
Haileybury School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
11+ entry is based on competitive examinations which take place in November of the year preceding entry. There will also be an interview, during which a senior member of staff will assess your child’s skills in two areas of the curriculum.
Please note that the admissions process commences with registration, which includes a payment of a £100 non-refundable fee. As part of the procedure, reports and references from your child’s current school will be obtained.
If Haileybury offers your child a place, you will be asked to secure it with a payment of a deposit, refunded during your child’s time at the school.
Haileybury School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships are awarded on merit and are not means-tested. Candidates who demonstrate excellence, outstanding achievement and promise at all stages of the admission process are automatically considered for the Haileybury Academic Scholarship, which typically carries a fee remission.
At 11+ entry, Haileybury also offers Music and Sport Scholarships. For more information about the scholarships, please visit the school’s website.
Dependent on individual circumstances and the need of financial assistance, a scholarship and bursary can run concurrently. Bursaries are offered to talented candidates or those in significant pastoral need. Applications for financial assistance are separate to scholarship applications.
The application for a bursary must be accompanied by your written statement and should be submitted prior to the entrance examination dates. Note that bursary applications submitted after receipt of a place offer may not be considered.
The Bursary Committee makes the final decision on who will be awarded a remission on either a proportion of the fees or, in some cases, full fees.
Haileybury School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Haileybury School’s entrance assessment consists of:
- Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4)
The CAT4 test aims to assess developed abilities via modules testing Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative Reasoning.
As part of the 11+ interview process, your child’s Maths and English skills will also be tested.
The English test examines writing skills. The maths test assesses problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills.
