Admissions Process for CLSG Eleven Plus (11+) for Year 7 entry
70-75 girls are accepted to City of London School at 11+. There is a two-stage entrance assessment (exam and interview), which takes place in January, prior to entering the school in September of the same year.
The school holds open events throughout the year, giving parents and girls the opportunity to look around the school, experience City life and ask any questions they may have. You will be able to meet and talk to current City girls who show you around the school and talk openly and honestly about all aspects of school life.
You do not need to book for an Open Day visit. Please visit the school website for upcoming dates.
In addition, in June, they hold a ‘Taster Afternoon’ for approximately 60 girls in Year 5 who are at state primary schools and who are hoping to apply to City for Year 7 entry. The afternoons give the girls a chance to get a glimpse of life at City. This event is advertised on the school’s website (usually in April each year) with an online application form, which must be completed if you would like to attend. Places fill fast.
Girls can register for the entry exam once they are in Year 5. To register online, visit the school’s website.
The deadline for registration is sometime in November, so do make sure you check the school’s website to find out the exact date.
The registration fee is waived for families in receipt of social benefits who will be applying for a bursary, so if this is relevant, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your details, rather than filling in the online form.
There are exams in English and maths.
The English paper is 1 hour and 20 minutes long and is divided into 3 sections: 1 reading and 2 writing.
Reading – there will be a short passage to read, normally about a page long, and comprehension questions about the passage to answer.
Writing – there will be a creative writing task that may be based in some way on the passage in the Reading section. There will then be a short discursive section, again based in some way on the passage.
The school is looking for girls who can read with discernment and understanding, with a firm grasp of both implicit and explicit meanings, and who can provide and back up their own opinions in a confident way.
The maths paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and has a variety of questions, testing numerical and arithmetic skills, problem solving and logical thinking. The questions get harder as the paper goes on.
The school is looking for girls with a solid foundation of accurate calculation skills who can think mathematically, drawing on existing knowledge to solve unfamiliar problems, noticing and using patterns, and explaining and justifying answers.
Sample papers are available on the school’s website.

Girls who perform well in the exam and who have been given a good reference from their current school will be invited for interview in the last week of January. The interview will last approximately 20 minutes and will be a one on one interview with a member of the City teaching staff.
It is not supposed to be a frightening experience and will be a chance for the school to learn more about the girls as well as giving the girls a chance to ask any questions about life at City. There will also be some questions assessing how the girls think – for example a maths puzzle, a piece of prose or a piece of artwork maybe presented on which to base a further discussion.
It is essential that girls are themselves and are able to demonstrate their ability to think independently. Pre-prepared answered will be spotted and penalised!
Scholarships and Bursaries
