Overview

City of London School for Girls aims to provide a stretching and challenging education for all girls.

Situated in the heart of The Square Mile, as part of The Barbican site, this position naturally enriches the school’s educational offer in unique ways. Museums, galleries and theatres are on its doorstep and world leading financial and commercial institutions a stone’s throw away. An eminent weekly speaker programme is something of which the school is rightly proud.

Community service and outreach are prioritised, being imbued in the school’s City of London philanthropic heritage.

Assessment Day and Entrance Exams

The assessment day for 7+ entry to City of London School for Girls takes place in November.

Tests are conducted in maths, reading (comprehension) and story writing (composition). Tests are age-standardised to ensure fairness.

City of London School for Girls 7+ exams are generally based on work girls will be familiar with from school. While it is important to work towards correct answers for maths, the school is also looking for individuals who show originality and flair. Therefore, like any 7 plus exam, relying on pre-prepared answers is not a good idea, as they will be spotted by experienced examiners.

English

Reading: Girls will be tested in groups of six. They will be asked to read a simple story fluently and then give a clear oral account of the points within it (verbal reasoning).

Composition: Girls will be expected to structure and develop a piece of writing in narrative form, demonstrating good spelling, accurate grammar and punctuation.

Maths

Girls will need to demonstrate:

  • knowledge of the meaning of numbers through application, for example counting or grouping different objects or scoring in games.
  • knowledge of multiplication tables x2, x3, x4, x5, x10
  • demonstrate experience of different coins, perhaps by playing shopping games
  • demonstrate experience of time, measurement, length, weight and capacity

Assessment and Interview

About 50 girls (a third) will be called back after the tests for an assessment morning. This morning is made up of fun practical activities and lessons in English, Maths and DT.

The school will be looking at how girls interact and work together, as well as the work they produce. They will be assessed in the following areas:

  • interaction with other pupils and staff
  • their approach to and experience of scientific enquiry through contexts taken from life processes, materials and their properties and physical properties;
  • if they display an inquisitive mind and an interest in finding out why and how things happen and work
  • their interest in visits and trips they have made
  • their interest in and approach creative activities such as painting, sewing and cooking

Parents and girls will also have a 20-minute interview. This is an opportunity to discuss areas of strength and weakness, to ask any questions and for both parties to learn more about each other. There will also be some questions to assess how the girls think – for example, girls maybe presented with a maths puzzle, a piece of prose or a piece of artwork to discuss.

Other Points of Entry

Occasionally, places are available for non-standard entry points (ages other than Years 3, 7 or 12), and girls are sometimes admitted girls into Years 4 and 5 in the prep school, (or years 8 and 9 in the senior school). But this only happens if current girls leave and places become available.

The school does not admit girls into Years 6, 10, 11 or 13.

Should a place arise in Years 4 or 5, the school follows a set procedure: all girls on the waiting list are contacted to find out if they are still interested in a place. The school then arranges for those still interested to attend a morning or afternoon of entrance assessments. Year 4 and 5 assessments involve a few short tests in English and maths and some practical activities to assess how the girls interact with other class members.
