Introduction
City of London School for Girls aims to provide a stretching and challenging education for all girls.
Situated in the heart of The Square Mile, as part of The Barbican site, this position naturally enriches the school’s educational offer in unique ways. Museums, galleries and theatres are on its doorstep and world-leading financial and commercial institutions a stone’s throw away. An eminent weekly speaker programme is something of which the school is rightly proud.

City of London School for Girls 7 Plus (7+) Admissions
24 girls are welcomed into City of London School for Girls at 7+. Entrance tests take place in the November prior to the year of entry – a little earlier than many other schools, so don’t get caught out!
Registrations are limited to 150 girls. You can register your daughter from Year 1.
Applications and Registration
Demand for registration for 7+ applications to City of London School for Girls is very high so it’s recommended to do this as early as possible.
Registrations usually open 2 years prior to the date of entry.

The quickest and easiest way to register is online.
The registration fee can be waived for applicants receiving social benefits (excluding child benefit). If applicable to you, you’re advised to register via email at admissions@clsg.org.uk, providing relevant documentary evidence, rather than filling in the online form.
Open Days/Visits
City of London School for Girls have 7 plus preparatory school open mornings taking place in September.
There is no need to book, just arrive within 30 minutes of the 9am start time. Open mornings will start with a tour of the school, followed by a question and answer session. Parents are encouraged to visit with their daughters, to see the school in action and meet with pupils and staff.
If you are unable to attend a set open morning, then small private tours can be arranged on certain dates at other times of the year.
City of London School for Girls 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format
The assessment day for 7+ entry to City of London School for Girls takes place in November.
Tests are age-standardised to ensure fairness, covering the following subjects:
- English
- Maths
- Reasoning
City of London School for Girls 7+ exams are generally based on work girls will be familiar with from school. While it is important to work towards correct answers for maths, the school is also looking for individuals who show originality and flair. Therefore, like any 7 plus exam, relying on pre-prepared answers is not a good idea, as they will be spotted by experienced examiners.
English
Reading: Girls will be tested in groups of six. They will be asked to read a simple story fluently and then give a clear oral account of the points within it (verbal reasoning).
Composition: Girls will be expected to structure and develop a piece of writing in narrative form, demonstrating good spelling, accurate grammar and punctuation.
Maths
Girls will need to demonstrate:
- knowledge of the meaning of numbers through application, for example counting or grouping different objects or scoring in games.
- knowledge of multiplication tables x2, x3, x4, x5, x10
- demonstrate experience of different coins, perhaps by playing shopping games
- demonstrate experience of time, measurement, length, weight and capacity

City of London School for Girls 7 Plus (7+) Assessment and Interview
About 50 girls (a third) will be called back after the tests for an assessment morning. This morning is made up of fun practical activities and lessons in English, Maths and DT.
The school will be looking at how girls interact and work together, as well as the work they produce. They will be assessed in the following areas:
- interaction with other pupils and staff
- their approach to and experience of scientific enquiry through contexts taken from life processes, materials and their properties and physical properties;
- if they display an inquisitive mind and an interest in finding out why and how things happen and work
- their interest in visits and trips they have made
- their interest in and approach creative activities such as painting, sewing and cooking
Parents and girls will also have a 20-minute interview. This is an opportunity to discuss areas of strength and weakness, to ask any questions and for both parties to learn more about each other. There will also be some questions to assess how the girls think – for example, girls maybe presented with a maths puzzle, a piece of prose or a piece of artwork to discuss.
Bursaries and Scholarships: There are no scholarships or bursaries available for City of London School for Girls at 7+, but there are in later years.
Destination schools at 11+: It is assumed that all girls will stay on at CLSG.
