Rydal Penrhos School maintains close links with Kitooha Primary School and the Development Studies Centre in southwest Uganda. It gathers money for the projects via a number of fundraising events and takes pupils on working trips to the far-off country every two years.
As the only independent Methodist school in Wales, Rydal Penrhos is home to an inclusive Christian community where respect for the individual is central. The school holds a number of Open Days, allowing you and your child to meet staff and current pupils and view its facilities, located at a short walk from the beach in Colwyn Bay. Personal tours can also be arranged. Spots can be booked via an online form or by contacting the Admissions Team.
Rydal Penrhos School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Entry to Year 7 is dependent upon performance in entrance examinations and an informal interview, as well as the quality of your child’s current-school reference and academic report.
Applications should be submitted by early January, whilst examinations are held in late January/early February.
Rydal Penrhos School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Rydal Penrhos School offers scholarships in the following areas:
- Academic ability – 4 awards
- Music – 2 awards
- Sport – 2 awards
Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance in entrance examinations and an interview. All applicants for Year 7 entry will be considered for this award.
Sport and Music scholarships are awarded on the grounds of portfolio and interview.
The value of the scholarships is £500 per year, to be spent on your child’s development in agreement with the Deputy Head, Director of Music or Head of PE. The sum cannot be used for fee reduction.
Rydal Penrhos School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Rydal Penrhos School 11+ exam consists of the following papers:
- English (Literacy)
- Mathematics (Numeracy)
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper measures their ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
