Introduction

Newcastle upon Tyne Royal Grammar School (RGS) is an independent school that caters for boys and girls aged 7-18. It was founded in the sixteenth century as a boys’ school but became fully co-educational in 2008. Whilst being rightly proud of its rich history, RGS is very much a forward-looking establishment.

Academic success is important to RGS. The curriculum is both broad and challenging, with Junior School pupils enjoying traditional subjects, such as maths, English and science, and non-traditional subjects, such as drama and music. Teachers encourage pupils to think for themselves and to think creatively.

The co-curricular programme at Royal Grammar School is extensive, allowing pupils to develop existing skills and discover new talents while having fun. Activities on offer include climbing, gymnastics, coding and sewing. Furthermore, the school is open to adding to the programme based on suggestions from students. Getting involved in pursuits outside of the classroom helps pupils develop their confidence and become well-rounded young adults.

Pastoral care is taken seriously by all staff at RGS. The school recognises that to be happy and do well academically, children need to feel safe and secure. Pupils are taught to be compassionate, kind and tolerant, values the school holds high. This creates a positive environment in which pupils can thrive. Should any student experience difficulties or have any concerns, they are encouraged to talk to their class teacher so they can get the support they need.

As the first step in the admissions process, RGS encourages you to visit the school so you can see if it is a good fit for your child. You can arrange a personal tour during the week to see the school in action, enabling you to meet current pupils, speak to the Head and explore the facilities. You can also attend the Open Morning in November, which will give you the chance to meet staff members and ask any questions you have.

Should you decide to register your child for a place in Year 5 (one of the main entry points to the Junior School), this needs to be done by the November deadline when your child is in Year 4. Registering includes paying a £25 non-refundable registration fee.

Once registered, RGS will want a report from your child’s current school. The report will help RGS decide whether your child is the sort of pupil who will be able to fully access their curriculum and make the most of all they have to offer.

Less than a week after the registration deadline, your child will attend the Assessment Morning to sit tests in English and mathematics. Based on the results of these tests and the quality of the school reports, some children will be invited to the Activity Day, held in December of Year 4. The Activity Day means the school can further assess your child’s academic ability and also assess other qualities, such as their social skills, ability to work as part of a team and their level of resilience.

Royal Grammar School, Newcastle: Year 5 (9+) Bursaries

A limited number of bursaries, worth up to 100% of the school’s fees, are available to candidates who excel in the entrance tests and need financial assistance to be able to attend RGS. RGS does not currently offer any scholarships.
