Introduction
Portland Place School is a co-educational independent day school in London. Located in the heart of the City of Westminster, it was founded with the purpose of providing a relaxed learning environment, as a direct response to the many intense and examination-focused independent day schools in London.
In Senior School, pupils take lessons in English, mathematics, science, history, geography, drama, music, computing, design technology, MFL and PE.
After-class activities offer pupils an array of opportunities to broaden their interests. These range from LAMDA, Debating Club and Design Club, to Russian, Mandarin and Spanish MFL clubs.
At Portland Place, pupils are inquisitive, open-minded and creative learners, stimulated to excel both in and out of the classroom. Whilst providing exceptional teaching of a modern curriculum within a secure, supportive and inclusive environment, the school actively prepares students for whatever path they choose to take in the future.

Portland Place School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
To register your child for a place, you should use the school’s online portal. Please note that the registration fee of £100 is non-refundable.
The admissions process includes an informal 20-minute interview with senior members of staff, held in November. The entrance assessment takes place the following January. Around this time, your child’s current school will be contacted for a reference.
Offers are posted in February. To confirm your acceptance, you will be asked to pay a £2,000 deposit, which will secure your child’s place at Portland Place. Prior to starting, they will be invited to the school for an induction day.
Portland Place School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships can cover up to 10% of the school fees. They are reviewed annually and depend on your child’s conduct, attitude, participation and progress. Initially, a letter expressing your child’s interest in the award should be attached to their registration form. Assessments in the form of auditions, trials and reviews of portfolios will take place in January.
Art Scholarships are awarded to candidates who demonstrate outstanding ability in art and concepts appropriate to the appreciation of art. Drama Scholarships are awarded to applicants who demonstrate talent, dedication and team working skills as essential to success in the theatre.
Music Scholarships reward exceptional ability and potential as tested in an audition. Sports Scholarships are offered to applicants who excel in one of the following disciplines: netball, rugby, football, cricket and athletics.
Portland Place School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Portland Place School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following tests:
- English
- Mathematics
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
