Introduction

Loughborough Grammar School is an independent school for boys located in Loughborough, Leicestershire. It was founded in 1495 by Thomas Burton.

LGS is one of the 4 schools that belong to the Loughborough Schools Foundation. It is noted for offering a number of means-tested bursaries, called School Assisted Places (SAPs), which cover up to 100% of fees.

The school aims to provide both academic breadth and depth to its pupils through a challenging and varied curriculum. In Year 7, boys choose from up to 18 subjects, including mathematics, religious studies, science, humanities, PSHEE, and French, German and Spanish as modern language options, all taught by subject specialists.

At Loughborough Grammar School, boys are encouraged to develop lasting friendships under the care of tutors who take a genuine interest in them. It is a school where positive masculinity is celebrated, whilst a growth mindset, resilience and emotional awareness are instilled as personality traits.

Boys learn to articulate at LGS. With the aim to enhance their intellectual skills, the school regularly provides them the opportunity to listen to inspiring speakers at the whole school assemblies.

Differences are not just tolerated, they are celebrated, which is most visible within the school’s House system, where a sense of belonging and collective pride is highly encouraged. The four House system of Abney, Davys, Pultney and Yates was established in 1991. Each House name celebrates an extraordinary individual who attended LGS in its early days, whilst the school was situated near the Parish Church.

Thomas Abney was the first Governor of the Bank of England. He was also a Mayor of London. George Davys went to become the first Bishop of Peterborough who laid the foundation stone of the school’s site in 1850. Richard Pultney was a doctor and a botanist, who’s herbarium still resides in the British Museum.

William Yates was a brilliant linguist who was fluent in Sanskrit, Urdu, Hindustani, Bengali, Hindi, Persian and Arabic. He translated many texts from the Bible into these languages, including the whole bible from the original Greek into Bengali.
