Introduction
Located on Saadiyat Island, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi (CAD) is a co-educational British international school. It opened in 2014, but its origins can be traced back to the prestigious Cranleigh School in Surrey, England, which was founded over a century ago. CAD is proud to be a school that has a happy and inclusive community.
Believing that education is about so much more than pupils retaining information, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi equips pupils with the necessary skills to have successful careers in the 21st century and teaches them how to contribute positively to the society in which they live. The aim is for all students to become creative, resilient, adaptable, responsible and independent young people.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities enables pupils to tackle new challenges and enhance existing talents. Students can get involved in competitive sports, such as golf, cricket and volleyball, and they can also develop their confidence, cooperation and communication skills by making the most of the thriving performing arts programme at the school. So impressive is CAD in the performing arts area that it has been awarded the Performing Arts School of the Year twice by Schools Compared.
Pastorally, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi is exemplary, with the school tailoring their support to best suit each individual child. Tutors are always ready to offer guidance and advice to both pupils and parents. Heads of Year, Housemasters, the School Counsellor and Senior Leaders also work hard to ensure that the wellbeing of pupils is at the heart of everything the school does.
Cranleigh Abu Dhabi: Year 9 (13+) Admissions Process
Cranleigh Abu Dhabi holds weekly tours so that you can see for yourself how positive the school environment is. Touring the school also gives you the opportunity to appreciate just how impressive the facilities are. Taking a virtual tour is also an option.
The school welcomes students from all over the world. If you would like to apply for a place for your child for Year 9, you should fill out the online registration form and submit all the required documents. There is no set deadline for registering but keep in mind that the school will commence entry assessments from January of the calendar year of entry. If your child currently attends a school in Abu Dhabi, the assessments will be arranged by the Cranleigh Admissions team. If your child currently attends a school outside of Abu Dhabi, that school will oversee the assessments and not CAD.
For 13+ entry to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, your child will sit an English creative writing paper, take an online test (CAT4) and be interviewed. Staff at CAD will review your child’s performance in these assessments to help them decide if your child will flourish academically and personally at their school. A report and reference from your child’s current school will also be taken into consideration.
If your child receives an offer of a place, which would be made within a few weeks of their assessments, you need to accept it within a week. You do this by paying an acceptance fee and submitting an acceptance form.
If your child will be joining Cranleigh Abu Dhabi from a school outside of Abu Dhabi, you will need a Transfer Certificate. Supporting documents will be required too. Cranleigh Abu Dhabi: Year 9 (13+) Scholarships
Academic, STEM, sport, art, performing arts and golf scholarships are available to 13+ entrants. There are different requirements for the different scholarships; however, all scholars will be extremely gifted in their chosen area, excellent role models and keen to embrace all that CAD has to offer.
Academic scholarships are awarded to students who excel in a wide range of subjects and are expected to perform incredibly well in the school’s internal exams and in public exams.
Art scholarships are awarded to students who produce impressive works of art, both in their own time and at school, that show they can use a variety of media.
Sport scholarships are awarded to students who are highly skilled in their chosen sport or sports and are members of sports clubs and organisations outside of school.

The English creative writing paper will allow CAD to evaluate the quality of your child’s spelling and grammar, as well as the accuracy of the punctuation they use. Furthermore, applicants are likely to need to demonstrate that they can do the following:
- use a range of sentence structures for effect
- use paragraphs to structure their work properly
- use a variety of language techniques
- engage the reader
- use sensory language
- include details to make their writing convincing
- use a wide and interesting vocabulary
The interview will be informal and short. You can expect your child to be asked about their academic interests and their hobbies. The interviewer will be looking to see if they believe that your child will be a good fit for CAD, able to make the most of both the academic provision and the extra-curricular provision on offer there.
