Chigwell School 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam Information – Key Details

Chigwell School is a co-educational day and boarding independent school, located in Chigwell, in the Epping Forest district of Essex. It consists of a pre-prep (ages 4-7), junior school (ages 7–11), senior school (ages 11–16) and sixth form (ages 16-18).

The school is situated in 100 acres of land between Epping Forest and Hainault Forest, ten miles from London.

Chigwell School’s rich history dates back to 1619 when a schoolhouse was erected on the site. It was formally founded in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett, Archbishop of York and Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, and began with “16 poor, clever scholars”.

The sixth form section became coeducational when its first girls were admitted in the summer term of 1974. The school became fully co-educational in 1997. The school’s curriculum is underpinned by the School Motto: aut viam invenium aut faciam (“Either I shall find a way or make one”).

The school teaches skills designed to promote the intellectual, personal, social, physical, spiritual and moral development of pupils. The curriculum consists of a formal programme of lessons, as well as an informal programme including extra-curricular activities, which are central to the School’s ethos.

All students in Years 7 to 9 study English, mathematics, geography, history, religious studies, art, design and technology, music, drama, and at least one language. French is taught from Year 3 to Year 7 inclusive, whereafter it becomes an optional subject. A second Modern Foreign Language (German or Spanish) is introduced in Year 7.

The development of determinedly independent spirit is fostered, along with the notion of pupils taking responsibility for academic progress, personal health and fitness and relationships with others and the world around them.

They are expected to work hard, take their studies seriously and aspire to be the very best they can be in all areas of school life.

According to the ISI Inspection Reports, the school meets all the Independent School Standards, the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools and the relevant requirements of the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

It is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) and the junior school is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS).

Why do some of the recommendations above show me grammar school papers?

The main difference between independent and grammar school papers is the question format. Independent schools usually assess with standard format questions, which means students need to write out full answers. Grammar schools usually use multiple-choice format questions.

Whilst Chigwell School is an independent school, they actually use the grammar school (multiple-choice) format for some of their exams, which is why they are included in the recommendations above.

Our practice tests aim to show what sort of questions were included in Chigwell School 11+ exam past papers. The information provided about Chigwell School was believed to be correct at the time of publishing. However, please be aware of future changes. We advise you to contact the school directly if you are unsure of anything. School contact details are provided within the post.
