Introduction
Spalding Grammar School (SGS), founded in 1588, is a selective boys’ grammar school located in the market town of Spalding, Lincolnshire. Catering for a cohort of almost 1000 pupils, SGS welcomes girls into the Sixth Form. [1]
According to Ofsted, Spalding Grammar is a ‘Good’ school, offering a broad and balanced curriculum as part of its efforts to promote a lasting love of learning. Pupils study science, humanities, languages and DT, among other subject areas, effectively preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of further education.
The enrichment programme offers something for everyone. Ranging from chess, computing and engineering clubs to trips, sports and community-focused activities, the relevant offerings target pupils’ aptitude and personal development, equally investing in their skill versatility and social proficiency. [2]
Recent examination results and leavers’ destinations have solidified the school’s solid reputation in the local community. Namely, an impressive 80.3% of students earned a grade 5 or higher in English and Maths GCSE, while 92% of pupils continued on to further education or entered the workforce after Year 13. [3]
Contributing to the popularity of the grammar are its state-of-the-art facilities. These include two spacious ICT suites equipped with modern technology, a cutting-edge drama studio for creative expression, a dedicated Business Centre to foster entrepreneurial skills and a food technology room that allows students to explore the culinary arts.
The facilities on site reflect the school’s commitment to providing a diverse and enriched educational experience, ensuring that students are not only academically challenged but also engaged in activities that foster a well-rounded understanding of the world around them. [4]

Spalding Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The 11 Plus Exam at Spalding Grammar School consists of two tests:
⦿ Verbal Reasoning
These sections test your child’s reasoning skills using language-based tasks, such as identifying patterns, completing analogies, solving codes and making logical deductions. They also measure your child’s ability to think critically and analyse information.
⦿ Non-Verbal Reasoning/Spatial Reasoning
The Lincolnshire 11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) sections test students’ ability to solve problems using visual and abstract reasoning. They do not rely on language skills but instead challenge students to identify patterns, relationships and sequences within shapes, figures and diagrams.
The Spatial Reasoning sections in the Lincolnshire 11 Plus Exam are designed to assess students’ ability to understand and manipulate visual representations of objects and space. Spatial Reasoning tests mental rotation, visualisation and problem-solving skills.
In order to select the top 25% of pupils, test scores are ranked in order and age-standardised.
