Introduction
Whitgift School is an independent day school for boys in South Croydon, London. Founded by John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury, the school is owned by the charitable trust he established in 1596, called the Whitgift Foundation. The school’s Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference.

Whitgift School 10 Plus (10+) Admissions
Open Days/Visits: The school hosts an Open Morning in September and an Open Evening in early October. Open Afternoons are held throughout the Autumn Term, allowing you and your child to experience Whitgift on a normal school day. For more details, please visit the school’s website.
Registration: To apply for a place, you should complete the online application and pay a £120 application fee. The deadline is late November of the year preceding entry.
Entry is dependent upon the quality of current-school reports and a confidential reference obtained from the Head Teacher, as well as performance in the 10+ exam, which takes place in the January preceding September entry.
Whitgift School 10 Plus (10+) Exam Format
Entrance Assessment: The exam consists of papers covering mathematics, English and Critical Thinking.
- The maths paper lasts for 60 minutes, covering the full curriculum.
- The English paper, lasting 60 minutes, examines your child’s comprehension and writing skills, including spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
- The Critical Thinking paper assesses the ability to solve multi-step problems.

Whitgift School 10 Plus (10+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Bursarial assistance is offered on the basis of entrance exam results, but only families with annual income below (approx.) £93,000 will be considered eligible. Bursaries may cover up to 100% of the fees. Results of the application for a bursary are made known at the same time as an offer of a place is made. Application forms can be found here.
