Established in 1807, Mill Hill County High School is a secondary school with academy status. Located in Mill Hill in the Borough of Barnet in London, it was the first comprehensive school in the UK to have a student accepted on to the Morehead-Cain merit scholarship program in the US.

 

Mill Hill educates approximately 1,700 students aged between 11 and 18. It aims to provide an environment for pupils to develop their strengths and overcome barriers. Mill Hill County High School has a traditional approach to student behaviour and students are expected to wear a distinctive uniform.

Mill Hill County High School Year 7 Admissions

 

Admission to Year 7 at Mill Hill County High school is determined by student performance in either the Technological Aptitude Test, the Music test, or the Dance Audition. Typically, the school admits 243 students into Year 7 and places are always oversubscribed. In cases where there are more applicants than available places, the school uses the following criteria to determine admission, giving priority to:

 

  • Looked After or previously Looked After children
  • Students who live closest to the school
  • Pupils who already have a sibling at the school
  • Children of members of the teaching staff
  • Up to 24 technology, 24 music and 12 dance places

 

The school website states that last year, over 3000 students registered for the aptitude tests and auditions. As a result, the school encourages parents to contact the Admissions Office by post or by email at admissions@mhchs.org.uk for further admissions information.

How to Apply for 11 plus Year 7 Entry to Mill Hill County High School

 

Before applying for a Year 7 place at Mill Hill, parents and prospective pupils are encouraged to visit the school on its Open Evening in September. During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to meet students and staff. A limited number of parents (not students) may be able to tour the school by appointment. In order to apply for a place at the school, parents need to register their child by completing the registration form. They also need to complete a Supplementary Information Form via the school’s website. Additionally, parents should complete a Local Authority Common Application Form (CAF) and name Mill Hill County High School as one of the choices.

 

If an application is unsuccessful, parents will be notified in writing and will receive details of the Appeals procedure.

 

Mill Hill County School 11 Plus Exam: Technological Aptitude Test

 

The Mill Hill County Technological Aptitude Test is set by the exam board GL Assessment and is taken in September. The test comprises two sections:

 

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Abstract reasoning

 

The verbal reasoning section of the exam is likely to focus on vocabulary-based exercises. The abstract reasoning section is likely to contain questions similar to a non-verbal reasoning test, focusing on problem solving skills using patterns and shapes rather than words.

 

After taking the test, the school will write to all parents in October to provide their child’s test score. Further information on how test scores relate to the allocation of places is also provided.
