Introduction
Tonbridge School is an independent boarding and day school for boys in Tonbridge, Kent. Founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judde, the school is a member of the Eton Group and is affiliated with the Worshipful Company of Skinners, one of the oldest London livery companies.
In Year 9, boys take lessons in English, mathematics, MFL, physics, chemistry, Latin, biology, geography, technology, history, digital creativity, divinity, art, drama, music and PE. Within the co-curricular programme, boys engage in music, art, drama, sport and many other activities which underpin the school’s culture of creativity, innovation and excellence.
Tonbridge fully encourages involvement in the community via its own Community Action group (TCA). Fundraising for charities, taking part in ‘green’ initiatives and working in partnership with the Marsh Academy enable boys to engage in socially responsible initiatives, helping to develop values of immense importance in today’s and tomorrow’s world.

Tonbridge School 13 Plus (13+) Admissions
It is highly recommended by the school that you make an initial visit to the school three or four years before your son’s date of entry. After the visit, if you wish to apply for Year 9 entry, you should complete the Tonbridge Registration Form and return it to the school. The registration fee of £200 is non-refundable. You are advised to register your son by the end of Year 5, since the majority of offers are made in January of Year 6.
Those boys who are registered three years prior to proposed entry are invited to sit the ISEB Common Pretest and attend an assessment afternoon during the Autumn Term of Year 6. A current school report will be requested around this time. Entry is subject to a positive report, along with successful performance in the ISEB Pretest and the assessment afternoon.
Offers of places are typically sent out towards the end of January.
Top-performing candidates receive an unconditional offer of a place at Tonbridge in Year 9. Others may receive a provisional offer of a place, and will be expected to take part in further competitive assessments, which they need to complete at Tonbridge during the Summer Term of Year 7 in order to receive an offer of an unconditional place. These assessments will examine Maths and English skills.
To accept the offer of an unconditional place, you should return the Final Entry Form and pay an admission fee of £2,000. When returning the form, you will have the opportunity to express a preference for a particular boarding or day House.
Tonbridge School 13 Plus (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries
If your son receives an unconditional offer, he will have the opportunity to apply for an academic scholarship. The scholarship assessment takes place in late April/early May of Year 8.
At 13+, scholarships are also awarded in Music, Sport, Drama, Art and Design Technology & Engineering.
Scholarships may be coupled with Bursaries, covering up to 100% of the fees. For more information, please refer to the school.
