Introduction
Basic information: Bedford Modern School (BMS) is an independent co-ed day school in Bedford. Dating back to the 16th century, it maintains a strong tradition in sports and caters for approximately 1210 pupils. [1]
Curriculum: In the Junior School, the educational provision broadly reflects BMS’ aims to provide children with strong qualifications ahead of their Senior years. The syllabus comprises everything from DT, PSHEE and mathematics to science, swimming and MFL, encouraging pupils’ thorough exploration of their individual capacity for learning.
Co-curricular: The timetable of activities comprises a myriad of opportunities for all-round growth. Children enthusiastically engage in creative, physical and academic pursuits, including rugby, oboe, drama, cello, geography club and squash, maximising the span of their interests in parallel with their love of teamwork. Bedford Modern School 8 Plus (8+) Admissions
The deadline for 8+ registrations is at the beginning of December of the year preceding entry. Please note that the £100 registration fee is non-refundable.
The admissions process includes references from your child’s current school and a two-stage examination process. The stage one exam is taken online in January, while the stage two exam is paper-based and taken a few days later.
Results are sent out in February and the acceptance deadline is in March. A £500 deposit is payable upon acceptance of a place, refunded during your child’s last term at the school.

Scholarships and bursaries are not available to 8+ applicants.
Bedford Modern School 8 Plus (8+) Exam Format
The Bedford Modern School 8 Plus (8+) Stage 1 exam consists of the following assessments:
- English (online test)
- Mathematics (online test)
- Non-Verbal Reasoning (online test)
The English assessment examines comprehension skills, including inference and grammar.
The Maths exam assesses general mathematics and arithmetic skills, including your child’s knowledge of times tables.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning exam measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
The Bedford Modern School 8 Plus (8+) Stage 2 exam consists of the following assessments:

- Creative writing
- Group activities
The English Reading assessment examines comprehension skills, as well as the fluency of your child’s reading skills.
The Creative writing exam measures writing skills, including punctuation and spelling. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
