Table of Contents
Bedford Modern School (BMS) is an independent co-educational school in Bedford. In the past, the school was known under four names: the Writing School, the English School, the Commercial School and finally, Bedford Modern School (in 1873). The last change of name was made in accordance with the introduction of a modern curriculum which provides an education for the professions.
The school became independent in 1976 and coeducational in 2003 and is to this day known for providing education that’s rigorous and relevant. Such education aims to inspire all students to set high standards for themselves and develop a love of learning and academic curiosity as well as an ability to think independently.
The curriculum in Year 7 concentrates on the core subjects of mathematics, English and science as well as three humanities, three languages and lessons in ICT, technology, music, art and drama.
Through the development of their emotional intelligence and self-awareness, students at BMS build positive relationships with existing and potential students, staff, parents and the wider community.
The overall experience at BMS is further enriched by the provision of an extensive range of co-curricular opportunities. The Outdoor Opportunities programme is comprehensive and plays a vital role in the progress of every student. It offers a variety of opportunities from Year 9 onwards, including expeditions to Europe and a biennial remote expedition abroad.
Another option for the same age-group is Combined Cadet Force which is available to both boys and girls. Via this programme, Cadets develop specific military and survival skills through sport and outdoor adventure training.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is also open to all (on a voluntary basis).
The variety of clubs available for Seniors includes Aural Class, Fitness, Maths Club, House Debating, Book Club, Classics Club, Yoga, Bass Club, Flute Ensemble, Music Theory Class, Christian Union and Eco Club.
In line with the school’s motto: Floreat Bedfordia (May Bedford Flourish) students are encouraged to be honest and tolerant to each other, whilst guided by strong moral principles nurtured within the school’s flourishing community.
