Introduction
St Albans High School for Girls (STAHS) is an independent day school for girls in Hertfordshire. Founded in 1889, it has both Prep and Senior divisions, located in Wheathampstead and St Albans, respectively. The Prep occupies 18 acres of parkland, including play areas, an adventure playground and an outdoor learning classroom. [1]
Academically, it provides an innovative educational environment that values effort, critical thought and intellectual curiosity. The diverse curriculum exposes students to a wide range of relevant subject options, including mathematics, science and computing, maximising their learning capacity in the process.
Choosing from over 50 co-curricular clubs, students at STAHS Prep further improve their skills in drama, dance, music and sports. The school’s very own Wild Woodland Adventure club allows girls to take part in a number of vastly popular activities such as fencing, archery and karate. The deadline for applications is in November of the year preceding entry, while your child is in Year 3. The registration fee of £100 is non-refundable.
The entrance examinations take place in December. Upon satisfactory performance, your daughter may receive an offer of a place (in late January). The deadline to accept the offer is in early February.

The 8+ examinations at STAHS consist of the following assessments:
- online tests in mathematics and English
- a creative writing task
The English online test is likely to examine comprehension skills, including inference and grammar. The maths exam, taken online, will examine your daughter’s knowledge across key areas of the syllabus.
The English writing task tests writing skills and marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
