Introduction
The King’s School, Macclesfield is an independent school for day pupils located in Cheshire. It was established in 1502 by Sir John Percyvale, a former Lord Mayor of London.
In Year 7, all pupils follow a broad curriculum comprised of Critical Thinking, English, mathematics, history, geography, religion & philosophy, Sciences, games, PSHE, ICT, two languages and games.

The school holds an Open Day in the Autumn term, designed to provide parents and children with an insight into life at King’s. The admissions process begins with registration made via a form available on the school’s website. The registration fee is £50.
Your child will then be invited to sit an entrance examination. A further important step in the admissions process is an interview, during which your child will discuss their academic interests, hobbies and other activities with either the Headmaster, Deputy Head, Principal or Director of External Relations.
A reference from your child’s current school will be requested in advance of the entrance examination. Upon successful performance in all key stages of the admissions process, you will receive an offer of a place in February, to be accepted by the end of the first week of March.
The King’s School, Macclesfield, 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
King’s offers a number of academic, musical and sporting scholarships each year. Scholarships typically cover up to 10% of the school fees and are made at the discretion of the Governing Body. They are reviewed annually and are offered on the basis of open competition, but carry clear expectations of involvement and achievement.
In recognition of an outstanding performance in the 11+ entrance examination, the school awards academic scholarships, tenable throughout your child’s career in the school. King’s provides a number of bursaries each year. They are means-tested and are based on both parents’ income and assets. Households with a gross annual income of less than £59,000 would typically qualify for financial support. The bursary may cover from 10% up to 100% of school fees. Aside from being means-tested, the award also depends on your child’s academic performance in the entrance examination.
To apply for a bursary, you will be expected to complete a KSB1 form in advance of the 11+ examination. All information is kept strictly confidential.
Bursaries are reviewed annually and may increase/decrease in accordance with changes in your financial circumstances. They are tenable throughout your child’s career in the Senior School, subject to good conduct and progress.

The King’s School, Macclesfield, 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The King’s School entrance assessment consists of the following papers:
- English (1 hour)
- Maths (1 hour)
- Verbal Reasoning (45 mins)
The English paper consists of Section A – Reading (40 minutes) and Section B – Writing (20 minutes).
In Section A, the questions will test your child’s understanding of the provided passage, asking for fact retrieval and an in-detail engagement with the language and literary techniques used in the passage. They will be expected to consider the structure of the extract, using quotations in support.
In Section B, the accuracy and imagination of your child’s writing will be assessed via a short descriptive task. The school will look for lively ideas, varied and controlled grammatical features, and a rich vocabulary that is spelled correctly. Paragraphing and appropriate punctuation will also be taken into account.
The mathematics paper is also divided into 2 sections. Section A consists of a number of short questions testing a command of basic ideas from the syllabus, whilst Section B requests longer responses which tests your child’s ability to apply mathematical reasoning in problem-solving contexts.
Your child will have 45 minutes to complete the Verbal Reasoning paper, which requires quick and accurate response to the questions. The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess your child’s logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
